The English Master Dance hall

The English Dancing Master (or The Dance hall Master in the posterior editions) is a collection of Contredanse S English published in 1651 by the editor John Playford.

He knew 18 editions until in 1728. the widening of the repertory, passing in 105 dances in 1651 to 358 dances in 1728, required the division of the work in several volumes: volume II appeared towards 1713 and contained 200 new dances, while a volume III appeared in 1719 and 1726, adding up more than 920 dances.

At the beginning of the 20th century, the British specialist in the Histoire of the dance Cecil Sharp published 6 volumes of reconstitution of the English fines, mainly those published by John Playford.
