the Earth which flames is a German film carried out by Friedrich Wilhelm Murnau left in 1921.

History of a film

A lost film, reappeared with the favor of an Italian priest who had a copy of it that it projected in a lunatic asylum under the title He Campo del Diavolo , name given to this ground filmed like a curse. A legendary work become because a long time invisible, causing of share its disappearance, phantasms and lamentations at the film hunters.

Synopsis

" The Field of the Devil " is a place cursed, which frightens all the population of a small village of Silesia, since an ancestor of the Rudenburg family perished there, victim of a mysterious explosion, after having vainly dug a well in the search of a hidden treasure. The count von Rudenburg, current holding of the title, excavates to him also the basements, without result. He lives in his manor with his second wife, Helga, and a girl resulting from a first marriage, capricious Gerda. Not far from there, an old peasant, Rog, die by leaving two wire, Peter, very attached to the family ground, and Johannes, more ambitious and more unsteady. This last is made engage as secretary at Rudenburg. The two women fall in love with him.

The count dies in his turn, bequeathing the field cursed to his widow. Johannes marries Helga, without liking it, because it keeps in mind only the treasure. He discovers that it is about an oil-bearing source and obtains from a financial group the means necessary to its exploitation, for the sum of 25 million marks. During this time, his wife, whom he forsakes, sells the cursed ground which she inherited in Peter, with the help of twelve thousand marks. Johannes, furious, the sum to make cancel the sale contract. Peter agrees to it, but the young woman, seeing herself badly loved, drowns despair in the river.

Gerda, which by spite became engaged to a nobliau surroundings, the baron von Lellewel, re-appears, hoping to recover Johannes. But this one pushes back it, confirming that it liked any of the two women forever and did not act that by ambition. To be avenged, Gerda puts fire at the derrick which was installed on the Field of the Devil. Conscious finally of misfortunes which it caused, and of the vanity of its ambitions, Johannes turns over to the village, where his/her brother and Maria wait, a country-woman who did not cease liking it.
