The Earth remains

the Earth remains is a novel of Science-fiction of 1949, written by George R. Stewart. At the contemporary period (of after secondary world war), a small number of survivors try to reconstitute a small island of peace after a probably biological catastrophe.

History

Isherwood Williams, studying in archeology insulated in the mountains, recovers from a short and violent disease. While going down again in the valley, it notes that all is deserted.

After research, it meets some survivors with whom it tries to reconstitute a " civilization". The book is the occasion of a reflection on the impact of the disappearance of the man - the super almost éradiqué predator, the biotopes are rebalanced violently - and on what bases a human group.

After two generations, the scientist who wanted to save the culture of his time becomes a wise old man, venerated by his descendants. If they returned to a culture of hunters/gatherers, the report of the hero is not negative: the important remainder capacity to be lived in group and in the reciprocal respect.

The reflection is rather relevant, but Stewart could not at the time step imagine a world such as ours became. Let us imagine a little that it replaced the Golden delicious Spoils by a nuclear powerplant. This assumption would make cold then in the back since the déliquessence of such a race delivered to itself would be probably catastrophic. Then good-bye the wild cows which one drives out with arcs on councils of Ish Grandfather…
