The Dumb woman of Portici
the Dumb woman of Portici is a opera of Daniel-François-Spirit Auber of 1828 which puts in scene a revolt of the Neapolitan people against the Spanish at the 17th century. Its name comes from Portici, which is a fishing port in the suburbs of Naples. The booklet is of Scribe and Delavigne.
The representation with Brussels with the Theater of the Currency, the August 25th 1830 (at the time of the 59e birthday of the king William of Orange) started the riots which led to the independence of the Belgium -, October 4th, 1830. At the time of the air Love crowned of the fatherland , the spectators rose and left in the street:
- Love crowned of the fatherland,
Return to us the audacity and the pride;- has my country I owe the life.
It will owe me its freedom.
This work fell today into the safe lapse of memory from rare attempts (Marseilles in 1991) remained without a future. The opening is still extremely popular.
She was however a phenomenal success with her creation with Paris in the room of the street Pelletier, the February 28th 1828: 505 representations in Paris until in 1882 and 285 times at Berlin before 1898.
This work exalte the feeling of the fatherland and that of freedom through this fresco of Neapolitan under the Spanish yoke.
