The Drifters

The Drifters is a vocal group of Rock-and-roll, Rythm and blues and American Soul formed in 1953.

Clyde Mc Phatter, former singer of the Dominoes, founds the group with some companions of choral society. Engaged by Ahmet Ertegün, owner of Atlantic, they meet success as of the first disc, Money Honey , precursor of the rock' roll, which is classified n°1 charts rhythm & blues. They connect with Such has Night , Honey Love , White Christmas (gold disc).

In 1954, McPhatter, party with the army, are replaced by David Baughan, then Johnny Moore, without much of results. Their manager George Treadwell transfers all the group then and replaces it by the musicians of Five Cowns and the singer Ben E. King. Thanks to the compositions of Jerry Leiber and Mike Stoller, they join again with success, and take down the 2nd place of the pop charts with the title There Goes My Baby , then the first with Save The Last Dance For Me , signed Doc. Pomus and Mort Shuman.

Ben E. King, estimating himself floué, does not delay with claquer the door to start a brilliant career solo and Rudy Lewis takes her place. They still leave some tubes with Up One The Roof and One Broadway . But Lewis, drug addict, die of an heart attack in 1964. The singers follow one another the head of Drifters then, who will manage however never again to reconsider the front of the scene. They separate in several parallel formations bearing all the name from The Drifters and continue to turn of during many years. They are established with the Rock-and-roll Hall off Famed in 1988.
