The Dresden Frauds

The Dresden Dolls (“Headstocks of Dresden”) is an American northern group, founded with Boston in 2000. Its members are Amanda Palmer, with the Piano and the song, accompanied by Brian Viglione, with the battery. This last also takes charges the rare parts of guitar with them.

This group claims Brechtian Punk Cabaret , their label own (not followed, Katzenjammer Kabarett being dissociated strongly musicalement); it takes as a starting point the musics and the parts of cabaret of Bertolt Brecht and Kurt Weill.

Biography

The group is formed shortly after that Brian Viglione was pilot of a spectacle solo of Amanda Palmer to a festival of Halloween. The group makes speak about its spectacles during which they are disguised in a vestimentary style holding at the same time of the goth, of the cabaret and the MIME.

The name of the group according to Micrometer caliper, would come from a combination of various elements: the Bombardment of Dresden, the porcelain headstocks which were typical of this same city before the war, a song éponyme of The Fall, as well as a reference to the characters of the novel Flowers in the Attic of V.C. Andrews, and finally the evocation of Germany of Weimar and its culture of Cabaret. Moreover, Palmer appreciates the opposition between the terms Dresden which evokes the destruction and Dolls the innocence, which points out at the same time violent and soft character of their music.

After an own-produced demonstration, the group leaves a compilation especially made up of live, has Is for Accident . In 2004, they leave a first album éponyme produced by Martin Bisi (Swans, Sonic Youth). Their last album, Yes, Virginia left in April 2006.
