The department of the Dordogne (24) is a department French of the area Aquitaine which owes its name with the river of the same name.

History

The department was created with the French revolution, the March 4th 1790 pursuant to the law of the December 22nd 1789, on part of old the province of the Périgord.

The Dordogne belongs to the area Aquitaine.

It is bordering on the departments of the High-Vienna, of the Corrèze, the Lot, Lot-et-Garonne, the the Gironde, the Charente-Maritime and the Charente.

The inhabitants of the Dordogne are called Périgourdins or Périgordins (by analogy between the current department and the old province of Périgord which corresponded to him).

The Périgord is an Eden whose inhabitants seldom pronounce the republican name: The Dordogne. Here, of north in the south and of is in west, one is " in Périgord" . The autochtones, like the newcomers of France, Europe or besides live Périgord, not the Dordogne. The department is a historical incident digested by this region with the strong identity, underlined by the language of Oc. And the Dordogne remains what it is: a river. It is born from 2 brooks auvergnats, Gilds it and Dogne, descends the slopes of the Puy de Sancy for, 490 kilometers further, to join Antlantique via the nozzle of Ambès.

The nationals of the the United Kingdom are more than twenty thousand (in 2006) to live there but the majority pay attention not to be remained more than six months and a day to avoid being considered resident in France.

Language

The language of Périgord is the Occitan, of dialect the Limousin in the roughly going north of a line of Montazeau to Nadaillac, and of dialect Languedocien in the south of this line. Only the communes of Parcoul and the Rock-Chalais (partly) are of Langue of oil (dialect Poitevin-saintongeais).

Among the most beautiful villages of France, 9 are in the Dordogne on 148, locating the department in second position after the Aveyron which counts 10 of them.

The Valley of Vézère with the caves of Lascaux, the Caves of Eyzies, the Castling Saint-Christophe, the Rouffignac and celebrates it Abri of Cro-Magnon.

Famous cities of Sarlat, Bergerac, Nontron and its masquerade of Soufflaculs, its gardens of arts, its Pole of the Trades of Arts, its cutlery “Périgord”, Périgueux and its Gallo-Roman ruins, its medieval city (MH and PSMV).
