The Dominoes is a vocal group of Rhythm and blues and American Doo-wop of the Années 1950. Founded by Billy Ward (September 19th, 1921, Los Angeles - February 16th, 2002, Inglewood, California), it counted in its rows the singers Clyde McPhatter and Jackie Wilson. Its larger success was Sixty-Minute Man , one of the first Rock “roll of the History.
Biography
Child, Billy Ward receives a traditional training of soprano and goes up on scene as of the six years age. He studies various instruments and starts to compose at fourteen years. It forms Dominoes with
New York in 1950. The first singer of the group is the tenor Clyde McPhatter. The group is engaged at Federal, subsidiary of King Records, and spends on television in December in the emission
Arthur Godfrey' S talents scouts , where he interprets the standard of the
Blues Goodnight Irene . Their first disc,
C Something For Me , reached the sixth place of the classification rhythm & blues in January. They connect with
Sixty-Minute Man , larger hit R&B of the years 1951. True rock'n'roll “roll, the song even manages to be classified in the pop charts (n°17), made single for a black group at that time. The terms
rock'n'roll and
roll appear in the words (“
I rock'n'roll 'EM, long roll “EM all night ”). The piece will be taken again by
Hardrock Gunter,
Jerry Lee Lewis and by
Rufus and
Carla Thomas. In March 1952, Dominoes are the only vocal group to take part in the
Moondog Coronation Ball of
Alan Freed.
This year there, the personnel of the group is renewed considerably. Clyde McPhatter, party to join the Drifters, is replaced by Jackie Wilson. They rename then Billy Ward & The Dominoes and record a new success: Cuts Mercy Baby . In 1954, they sign at Jubilee then at Decca in 1956, where they integrate one second time the pop classification with St Therese Of The Pink . Jackie Wilson from goes away to are turn to make a brilliant career solo and the group leaves to Liberty and obtains a last tube in 1958 with Jenny Lee (n°5). But it will never find again success of the beginnings.
