Synopsis

Through the life of the scientist Averroès, is evoked the Andalusia of XIIe century, place of confrontations between Moslem and erudite extremists concerned of the diffusion of knowledge.

The philosopher Averroès, first adviser of the Caliph El-Mansou, is recognized for his wisdom, his tolerance and his equity. But the Caliph, wishing to persuade the integrist ones, orders the auto-da-fe of all works of the philosopher of which the concepts will influence not only the age of the Lights in Occident, but all the human thought. The disciples of Averroès and its close relations then decide to make copies and to pass them of them beyond the borders.

This film, from a documentary point of view, also informs us on the characteristics of three great civilizations of Mediterranean space in XIIe century. The context geographical and historical proves at which point the contacts between those were strong, that they are peaceful or violent one. Youssef Chahine delivers a very beautiful portrait of the scientist Averroès, man of varied knowledge who contributed largely to the construction of the knowledge and his enrichment.

Treating tolerance and integrism, it is especially a film of an astonishing topicality.
