The Delgados
The Delgados is a British independent rock group formed with Glasgow in 1994 and separated in 2005, founder of the label Chemikal Underground.
Biography
The group is initially formed by Alun Woodward (song/guitars), Stewart Henderson (low) and Paul Savage (battery) on ashes of the Bubblegum group. They are soon joined by the boyfriend of Paul, Emma Pollock (song/guitars), and take the name of Delgados in homage to the victorious cyclist of the Tour de France Pedro Delgado.They choose to deviate from the traditional way of the recording companies to found their own label, Chemikal Underground , whose catalog will include/understand not only their own productions but also of the local groups which will become famous: Mogwai, (a) or Arab Strap. The group leaves on this label its first individual Monica Webster/Brand New Because in February 1995, which, in spite of the place invading of the britpop on the British scene, is noticed by John Peel, the respected DJ of the Radio operator BBC 1. The Delgados quickly becomes one of its preferred groups and will realize more than ten Peel sessions.
The cost of the second publication of Chemikal Underground, the individual Disco music Nation 45 of the (a) group, obliges The Delgados to leave its second individual, Lazarwalker , on the London label Radar Records in 1996. In spite of the proposal for a contract of five albums, the group joined Chemikal Undeground then again and leaves individual the Cinecentre all while dealing with the label. Follow this same year individual the Under Canvas, Under Wraps and Surcrose like their first album Domestiques . All these publications are acclaimed by criticism, John Peel placing even the song Under Canvas, Under Wraps in the third place of its classification Festive Fifty.
The second album of the group, Group , appears in 1998 - still a reference to cycling. Arrangements are more complex there, and the disc meets a new critical success. However, the sales do not follow as much, in spite of a 69ème place of individual the Pull The Wires From The Wall in the British charts and its first place in Festive Fifty of John Peel.
The group is locked up in studio to work with its third album as of September 1998, but, not arriving to a result which finds thanks to their eyes, they entrust the production of it to Dave Fridmann, producer of Mercury Rev or the Flaming Lips. The Great Eastern leaves at the beginning of 2000 and is again a success of regard. The third individual one, American Trilogy , reached despite everything the 61ème place of the British charts. The album is named in prestigious Mercury Music Prize and four of its songs are quoted in Festive Fifty, including two in signal 10.
The fourth album, Haste , appears in 2002 on the Mantra label, whose founder is a large admiror of the group. The epic songs of this album are once more adulated critics and voters of Festive Fifty but remain always little known general public. In this album, the song The Light Before We Land was used for the credits of beginning (Opening) of animates of 13 episodes Gunslinger Girl , making it possible the group to make known itself of a new kind of audience.
The Delgados turn over on their own label to leave in 2004 the album Universal Audio , which marks a rupture compared to its predecessors by a more melody approach, more " pop" and of the simpler structures. But the public recognition still does not come and the bass player Stewart Henderson ends up leaving the in April 2005 group, estimating that it was difficult for him " to devote as much of its energy and its time to a project which had never seemed to really collect an attention and a respect however mérités" (" to for so much off my energy and time into something that never quite seemed to get the attention gold respect I felt it deserved"). The group announces its separation then, but the four members continue to work together for the label. Jointly, the songwriters Emma Pollock and Alun Woodward devote each one to solo projects, while the beater Paul Savage deals with the studios of the group, Chem19 Studios, in Hamilton.
The members having acquired the rights of their sessions to the BBC, a double disc of 29 songs, The Supplements BBC Peel Sessions , appears on June 12th, 2006 in Europe.
