The Cult is a British group of Rock formed in 1981 by Ian Astbury, singer of the formation.
Formed initially in 1981 by its singer Ian Astbury under the name of " Southern Death Cult" , which left several individual then under name " Death Cult" with the addition of the guitarist Billy Duffy (ex Theater off haste).
Evolving/moving a time in a Gothic mobility , the formation forged a new identity around its two natural leaders, Astbury and Duffy, which combined musical qualities and a look superiors with the average, enabling them to be detached from the batch of the many groups evolving/moving on the London scenes. It adopted in 1983, the purified name of " The Cult" , less morbid and more federator.
The first album, Dreamtime , (1984) comprised a still dominant influence New wave and could be perceived like a transitory disc. In Love (1985) is carried out the psychedelic moult in Rock with more marked fronts and solos more present which serve of the solid compositions not stripped of melodies the such pieces Nirvana , Phoenix , She salts sanctuary , Brother Wolf, sister moon .
The appearance of the musicians is then rather hybrid: shirts with jabots or psychedelic, punk cut for Duffy, long hair with braids for Astbury, jewels with saltires, charms and badges various for all, clips making, as for them, the psychedelic good share with the revival .
The following album, which would have to be called Peace , is recorded with the Manor studios by Steve Brown and is registered by her arrangements in the line of Love . However, to the listening of the bands, the producer Rick Rubin recommends another optics plus hard rock with rhythmic heavier and square ones and obtains the principle of an integral re-recording .
These new bands will lead to the publication of the album Electric (1987) which inserts The Cult in the Pantheon of the hard rock groups with pieces like Wild Flower , Lil' Devil and Love removal machine , those recorded with the Manor studios presenting of the more fluid versions appearing in special editions under the name of Manor sessions .
Bob Rock will produce the following disc, Sonic Temple , (1989) in which the transformation into hard rock group continues, Billy Duffy endorsing the role of the “Guitar fair hero”, hair falling on the eyes, leather vêtu and the Gibson ahead while Astbury develops that of the charismatic singer.
The album makes it possible the group to conquer the United States and to continue with an album, Ceremony (1991) more alleviated, revealing influences close to The Doors as well on the musical level as on the sets of themes (Indians and the Chamanisme).
The occasion, Astbury benefits from its audience for jammer with many groups of which psychedelic the Garage of The Fuzztones with which it makes several concerts. Of these services, the live resumption of Down one the streets (The Stooges) is engraved over maximum (1990) then some years later the images appear on a DVD ( LSD 25 of The Fuzztones, 2005).
Whereas around Duffy and Astbury, the formation changes regularly, the duet continues its career with individual produces again by Rick Rubin, The Witch which will be integrated in compilation Pure Cult (1993) then with an album carried out by Bob Rock, The Cult (1994).
In 1995, Ian Astbury leaves to form The Holy Barbarians putting temporarily fine at its association with Billy Duffy.
In 1999, Duffy and Astbury, supported by the beater Matt Sorum reform The Cult, take part in the original soundtrack of the film 60 second stopwatch , and record for compilation Stoned immaculate (the music off the doors) (2000) the recovery Wild Child while, on this same compilation, Ian Astbury lends its voice to the musicians of Doors for the only piece Touch me , showing with the original members his capacity to compensate for the absence of Jim Morrison.
Bob Rock produces the album Beyond Good and Evil (2001) which marks the return of The Cult. the round which followed this publication was the subject of a DVD: Live Cult music without fear (2002).
From 2003, the career of The Cult is again put between brackets, Astbury agreeing to take part in the project of reformation of The Doors with Robbie Krieger and Ray Manzarek under successive names The Doors off 21st Century then Riders off the storm.
Same Ian Astbury will appear among the guests of the reformation of MC5 in 2003 on the DVD Sonic revolution: celebration off MC5 .
The group is signed on May 29th, 2007 on the label Roadrunner Records and records Born Into This , which leaves in October 2007. Individual the Dirty Little Rock Star leaves as for him on August 13rd, 2007.
