The Cousteau Society

Cousteau Society is a Association with nonlucrative goal American of Exploration Océanographique and of founded Protection of nature in 1974 by famous the Commander Cousteau, currently chaired by his second wife Francine Cousteau since its disappearance in 1997.

History

Cousteau leaves the army in 1949 to found the French oceanographical Campagnes (COF) in 1950 and buys its famous oceanographical Navire Calypso to produce documentary films on and under all the seas of the sphere.

In 1956, it is rewarded for the Palme of gold of the Cannes festival and the Oscar of the best documentary film 1956 for Le Monde of the silence Co-carried out with Louis Malle which contributes to make its celebrity and her popularity on all planet.

In 1957, it is elected with the direction of the oceanographical Musée of Monaco and was one from rare abroad admitted with the Academy of Science of the the United States.

In 1974, it creates “The Cousteau Society” with the the United States dedicated to the Protection of nature and the improvement of the quality of the life for the present generations and future.

In 1981, it founds “the Equipe Cousteau” with which it shares its explorations on all planet until its disappearance on June 25th, 1997 at the 87 years age. His second wife Francine Cousteau inherits all her goods and succeeds to him.

In 1999, Jean-Michel Cousteau, his/her oldest son of its first marriage with Simone Nickel silver, founds Future Ocean Society with the the United States to succeed the work of his/her father.

In November 2005 Jean-Michel Cousteau undertakes without any success to take advantage of its rights of heritage Calypso of his/her father in front of justice against Francine Cousteau, second wife heiress of the commander, and president of the Équipe Cousteau.
