The Countess of Escarbagnas

the Countess of Escarbagnas is a Comedy-ballet of Molière (music of Charpentier and ballets of Beauchamp), ordered by Louis XIV for the remarriage of sound brother with the palatine princess of Bavaria, after its widowhood. Songs and dance raised this spectacle of quality made to impress the German court.

  • the countess of Escarbagnas , noble widow of Angouleme which has just gone on a journey to Paris. She praises herself to have seen there the court and learned the best manners, but only manages to make itself ridiculous.
  • the count d' Escarbagnas , wire of the countess. The part names two others wire without showing them, the Marquis and the Commander.
  • the Viscount , Cléante of his first name, sighing in title of the countess, it is actually in love with Julie but their loves are opposed by hatred that their families dedicate themselves.
  • Julie , friend of the countess, but who actually makes use of her blindness to arrive to her ends with the Viscount.
