The Council of the Ten
the Council of the Ten , secret court of the Republic of Venice, composed of 10 members taken in the Great Council. It is an executive committee and legal of Venice and with the Doge managed the destinies of Sérénissime République of Venice.
It was charged to take care of the state security, to continue and punish the secret enemies of the republic. For that, it was armed with unlimited capacities, had right on all the heads and was freed from any responsibility.
This Council was created the July 10th 1310, after the conspiracy of Boémond Tiépolo; it was to exist initially only one short space of time; but, extended year by year, it ends up being declared perpetual in 1325. Since then, this magistrature dominated the republic of Venice; it fell only with the republic.
This council maintained the difficult relations with the the Holy See. Indeed, the conflict was prolonged at the time of Paolo Sarpi, when the whole city was excommunicated.
