The Council of the Republic
Name of the Upper House (corresponding to the Senate under the preceding republic and the following republic) under the Fourth French Republic. Its members had taken again the title of senator.
Its role was primarily advisory (simple opinion). It is only into 1954 that the Council of the Republic finds its legislative role since he votes the law again. The parliamentary Navette is thus restored. Even if a procedure were designed to give the last word to the National Assembly, this one were not used.
Composition
In 1947, the Council of the Republic is composed of 315 advisers: 200 are elected in metropolis, 14 in Algeria, 7 in the overseas departments, 44 in the overseas territories, 3 for Morocco, 2 for Tunisia and 3 for the French from abroad. The remainder is elected with the proportional one.

The presidents were:- 1946 with 1947: Auguste Champetier de Ribes (MRP)
- 1947 - 1958: Gaston Monnerville (radical)
