The the Council for the development of French in Louisiana or CODOFIL (in '' Council for the Development off French in Louisiana '') is an agency of the State for the promotion of the use of the French in the population of Louisiana.

History

Initiated by the representative (appointed) Louisianian James Domengeaux, it was created in 1968 by the Legislative act n°409 of the Louisianian legislature for “to do all that is necessary to encourage the development, the use and the safeguarding of French such as there exists in Louisiana for the largest cultural asset, economic and tourist for the state”

After the end of the Second world war, the number of French people speaking in Louisiana fell with the disappearance of the old generations and the young generations exclusively any more do not speak the English. By starting again the interest for French and by providing means of education, the council hopes that the young Louisianians will continue to speak it. The census of 2000 counts: 198784 Louisianian French-speaking people of more than 5 years of which: 4470 speaking the Creole Louisianian.

French spoken in the south about Louisiana by the old ones is particular with the area. He is very close to the Acadien, a Franco-Canadian dialect of the provinces of the New Brunswick and Nova Scotia. The differences are primarily academic, thus a Cajun of French native tongue can rather easily communicate with almost all the French-speaking people in the world.
