The Ville is located at the west of Alençon. Many a careers of Granite was exploited during several centuries until about 1980, to build the agglomeration alençonnaise. There remains today only of the water levels instead of the careers.

The Climat with Cop-on-Sarthese locates between the oceanic Climat of the Brittany and the oceanic climate range of the Paris basin. The commune of the Cop-on-Sarthe owes mainly its name with the river which crosses it: the Sarthe.

History

The origin of the name " Condé" would come from the following words:

  • condat : Celtic word which means " Confluent " ,
  • condasatio aquarum : Latin words which mean " meeting of the eaux".
Indeed, on order of Jules César in 50 av. J-C, the Romans built roads. One of them coming from Chartres crossed the the Sarthe to the Gué of the mill of Cop. Moreover, the ford of the mill of Cop is located at the confluence of the Sarthe and Randumière.

Dairy and " Rustique"

The war memorials the and the martyrdoms

  • Galochère

Monument also called the “Monument of shot”. June 22nd, 1944, four young men were carried out by the Germans in this isolated career. These four resistant belonged to the maquis of Trun. A few days later, on June 30th, they are fifteen resistant maquis of Courcerault and Mortagne-with-Pole which will be shot at the same place.

Today, a granite stele commemorative of the Cop-on-Sarthe is in the middle of this old career, pointing out the names of each one of shot. Each execution post is recalled by five balusters carved in the granite. The pit where the bodies were is surrounded by edges and is regularly flowered.

Personalities related to the commune

The Happy Abbot Martin Loublier

The parish of the Cop-on-Sarthe is honoured to have a former holy priest Martyr.

  • the Bienheureux Martin François Alexis Loublier was born and baptized in the old parish of O (Mortrée - Orne) on October 17th, 1733. Priest of Cop on the Sarthe of 1766 with 1792. First mayor to be elected in the Cop-on-Sarthe enters on February 7th, 1790 and on January 16th, 1791. He refused the constitutional oath and gave the keys of his load on June 25th 1792. Decree on August 31st 1792, imprisoned with the seminar of Saint-Firmin to Paris, it was judged there arbitrarily before being thrown by a window on September 3rd 1792 at the time of the general massacre of the priests locked up with Saint-Firmin ( to see Massacres of September ). It was Béatifié by the Pope Pie XI on October 17th, 1926.

  • Its name remains now attached to the Cop-on-Sarthe: it was given to the main street of the allotment located close to the “Room of the Quartz”.

The Fould family

Certain descendants of Achille Fould marked the history of the commune of the Cop-on-Sarthe.

  • Armand Achille Fould

Armand Achille Fould was born the September 19th 1890 in the Cop-on-Sarthe. Back grandson of Achilles Fould and wire of Charles Armand Achille Fould, he is mayor of the Cop-on-Sarthe between 1920 and 1927.

  • Jacques Fould

Jacques Fould was born the March 20th 1892 with Saint-Julien-Beychevelle (33). Back grandson of Achilles Fould and wire of Charles Armand Achille Fould, it takes the succession of his brother to the town hall of the Cop-on-Sarthe between 1927 and 1953.
