History
The protohistoric period, since the destruction of the dolmen of Esse, left few traces only of vast camps strengthened of the first Old one of Iron. The camp of Robadeau with Montrollet, habitat of the end of occupies a surface d´un hectare and its ramparts out of ground are still visible of rise because it was strengthened in one the deusième time. At the second Old one of Iron or Gallic period, the border between Lémovices and Pictons were located roughly on the limit between the granitic grounds limestones and grounds. The rocky outcrop D Saint-Germain-of-Confolens was already occupied then it will be built there a Roman villa.During the Gallo-Roman period, the territory depended for l´essentiel on the civitas on Lemonum (Poitiers). The way d´Agrippa, which connected Lyon to Saintes via Limoges, passes very to the south of the canton of Confolens. D´autres ancient ways crossed the territory: the ancient way Angouleme - Nickle silver-on-Hollow is still visible with Ansac-on-Vienna, Confolens, Ambérac, Esse and Brillac. The way from Périgueux to Poitiers crossed it with Ambernac. The way of Limoges with Angoulins crossed Vienna with ford with Manot.
After the fall of l´Empire Roman, Ambernac knew a certain prosperity related to the monetary presence d´un workshop mérovingien striking triens or third of penny d´or. A necropolis of this period attests prosperity of this place. Sarcophagi mérovingiens were also found close to l´église of Benest.
As of the Life century, the bishops established in Poitiers, Angouleme, Holy and Limoges play of the important political roles, but the territory remains with l´écart of these great centers.
Confolentais knows a great political instability with Xe and XIe centuries, because of long competitions between the counts of Poitiers and of Walk, the Viscount of Limoges and some lords local, such that of Confolens, depend on the principality of Chabanais, made up at the expense of the county of Walk and the Viscount of Rochechouart. The strategic positions on Vienna of Confolens and Saint-Germain-of-Confolens are l´objet many conflicts.
The first times of feudality, in XIe and XIIe centuries, the mounds castrales located close to At-Ferroux at the Old man-Cérier and that of Marcillac with Abzac, formant wedges in the commune d´Oradour-Faded, are there two rare examples still quite visible aujourd´hui. C´est at that time and jusqu´au XIIIe century which (Re) are built the majority of the churches of Confolentais. The One hundred Year old war and its reversals d´alliances affect Confolentais, with l´instar of l´ensemble of the close provinces. In the years 1350, the castle of Saint-Germain-of-Confolens east several times plundered, l´abbaye of Lesterps capitulates in front of Prince Noir on August 14th, 1356, the priory d´Alloue is plundered during the same countryside. The disorders of the One hundred Year old war and the plunderings caused by the bands of truck drivers impoverished the territory considerably. The abbeys and their dependences are in poor state.
The royal vacation ordering to strengthen the castles of the campaigns poitevines and the fields belonging to the great ecclesiastical establishments of Poitiers multiplies as from 1427 and jusqu´en 1500 certain churches in the same way are rebuilt mainly as with Old man-Ruffec and of the elements of fortification are added to the churches.
At the end of XVe century, a certain prosperity seems to return in Confolentais, like surrounding. The principal lords make build side chapels which modify the initial plan of the churches of Benest, Champagne-Sheep and especially of St. Bartholomew's Day Massacre to Confolens, where the construction of the three vaults north comes to mask the initial plan in Latin cross. Set up in baronnie, Confolens becomes independent of the principality of Chabanais to XVIe century. But Manot, which also depended on Chabanais, enters then the mobility of the baronnie of Loubert. With the creation of the general information in 1542, l´élection d´Angoulême, which includes/understands Old man-Ruffec, Hiesse, Ambernac and Epenède, is d´abord attached to the general information of Bordeaux before joining in 1558 the general information of Limoges. The other parishes of l´ouest depend on l´élection of Niort in the general information of Poitiers, whereas l´élection of Confolens is attached to the general information of Limoges.
Little d´années after qu´un bishop Limoges gave to the ostensions a septennial rate/rhythm, the reformed religion is a certain success in Confolentais, in particular in Benest and Champagne-Sheep, where several noble families convert following the family of Rochefoucault, owner of the castle of Champagne-Sheep, as of the years 1535-1540. Pasteur would have lived in Courteil and a house of Protestant prayer was held At-Mailloux in Benest. Confolentais suffers then from the wars of religion and their particularly violent repression. C´est in these circumstances that l´église Saint Martin's day of Champagne-Sheep would have been definitively destroyed. Several episodes of these conflicts took seat in the territory. With leaving this new period of disorders, Confolens is finally set up in county in 1604 by the king Henri IV.
The XVIIe century sees a certain catholic revival, especially with l´est of the territory. In Confolens, three important buildings are founded: the convent of the récollets in 1616, that of the clarisses in 1641 and l´hôpital of the sisters of Charity in 1668, then qu´en 1656 is created a brotherhood of penitent white. L´abbaye de Lesterps, remained in ruin since the bag of the Protestants, is rebuilt under l´impulsion of Charles-François of Vieuville. Following the revocation of l´édit of Nantes on October 18th, 1685, a hundred d´abjurations of Protestants is attested with Champagne-Sheep; several noble families are forced d´abjurer publicly with Old man-Ruffec, d´autres choose l emigration. Protestantism then seems to disappear from Confolens.
In spite of these political and religious disturbances and d´épidémies, documented for example with Lessac, the XVIIe century and especially XVIIIe seem to have constituted a time of relative economic prosperity. In thus testifies in Confolens construction to several private mansions, in particular with l´initiative families enriched by the tanneries, like the various branches resulting from the Babaud family. To Champagne-Sheep, the load of seneshal returns in the middle of the XVIIe century to Jean Dumas, of which l´influence of the s´étend family since the medium of XVIe century on many strongholds and agricultural domains of the surroundings.
This period is more difficult to characterize in rural environment. During XVIe and XVIIe centuries, the construction of manors, seats of small strongholds, s´intensifie. With XVIIe and XVIIIe centuries, houses with external staircase, houses with " balais" characteristics of the area, are generally houses d´artisans with workshop at the ground floor and dwelling with l´étage. Apart from the boroughs, very few houses are identifiable for this period. However, the very great majority of the hamlets is illustrated on the chart of Cassini and thus existed in the middle of the XVIIIe century. The rebuildings of XIXe and XXe centuries always do not make it possible to recognize the oldest frame lorsqu´il s´agit not of houses with side of wood or carrying specific decorations. These houses are more easily located in Confolens and in the two common neighbors of Lessac (Holy-Radegonde) and Saint-Germain, which concentrate the majority of the windows with moulurations intersected and accodances on civil frame. Forty-four dates of the XVIIe century however could be located, of which the half in the valley of Marchadaine (communes of Saint-Christophe and Montrollet).
L´élection of Confolens returns in 1714 to the general information of Poitiers, the baronnie of Champagne-Sheep then leaves l´élection of Niort to return to that of Confolens. The French revolution involves a deep administrative reorganization of the territory. The creation of the department of Charente could not be done on the basis of diocese d´Angoulême only, with the very restricted territory. Many discussions took place thus with l´Assemblée constituent between the representatives of the provinces of l´Angoumois and Poitou, Pleuville being a time attached to Vienna. The layout of the new communes, which does not recover that of the parishes d Ancian Régime, is stabilized after the removal of the commune of Saint-Quentin, integrated into Lesterps and Saint-Christophe. The Revolution has as a consequence the sale of many castles and manors like national goods; the Napoleonean wars involve, they, l´arrivée of Spanish prisoners in particular with Lesterps and Confolens, from which some make stock locally.
Confolens becomes, like Ruffec, sub-prefecture, and profits from the public institutions attached to this function: sub-prefecture, law courts and prison, d´abord placed in existing buildings then in new buildings in second half of the XIXe century. The XIXe century also sees the construction of the town halls and the schools and the transfer of the worms l exterior of the inhabited areas, except in Montrollet and Saint-Germain-of-Confolens. Many churches make l´objet renovation works, and two d´entre they, Pleuville in 1865 and Ambernac in the first years of the XXe century, are entirely rebuilt.
The agricultural production increasing, the fairs multiply, of the markets are built, the public rockers are installation. In the years 1840, a municipal slaughter-house is built in Confolens. The relative agricultural prosperity of the beginning of the XIXe century also results in an increase of 10% of the total population between 1821 and 1851. It reaches a historical peak then, with more than 27.500 inhabitants, that is to say twice more qu´en 1999, which involves the restoration or the rebuilding of many residences and barns.
The XIXe century is classically that of l´industrie. The industrial main activities of Confolentais related to l´eau and are naturally turned towards the agricultural outlets. During the century, the flour mills were added to and with oil which strew the territory since the Middle Ages, and the tannery corn mills of Confolens and its surroundings. The hydraulic force is also used for the manufacture of paper (Puygrenier in Confolens after 1874), of cloths and woolen articles. The wine and the spirits are produced with l´échelle family, even if l´on finds a liquor manufacturer in Confolens. Other industries present in the past on the territory relate to the transformation of l´argile, either out of bricks and tiles, or out of ceramics, the such ponnes of Benest.
The war of 1914-1918 made a big number of victims and war memorials are set up between 1921 and 1928 in l´ensemble communes. This period is marked by l accentuation of the demographic déprise communes, which lose on average nearly 13% of their population between the censuses of 1911 and 1921, which cannot s´expliquer by the only war and l epidemy damagees of Spanish influenza which followed. Between the two world wars, the population continues to decrease gradually. Seul Confolens is maintained and profited from new equipment like l´abattoir built apart from the city in 1925.
From 1940 in November 1942, the line of demarcation divides the communes of Pleuville, Benest, Champagne-Sheep and Saint-Costing. Several maquis are set up. The Foch maquis takes part in many combat in July and August 1944, in particular on July 25th with Champagne-Sheep and on July 27th with Ambernac. In reprisals, farms are burnt, of many combatants and civilians are shot. The borough of Pleuville and its hamlet of Ecures are burnt on August 3rd, 1944 whereas Champagne-Sheep is released on August 13rd. Steles, crosses and memorials testify to these events on the d´Alloue communes, Ambernac, Champagne-Sheep, Hiesse, Pleuville and Confolens.
Description of the territory
- GEOGRAPHICAL AND GEOLOGICAL CONTEXT
The territory of the Community of communes of Confolentais s´étend for its Western part on the sedimentary grounds of north of the Aquitanian basin and for its oriental party on the crystalline grounds of the Massif Central. The limit between these two types of grounds corresponds to the watershed between the basins slopes of the Loire (valley of Vienna and its affluents) and of Charente. With l´est, of share and d´autre of the valley of Vienna, the crystalline base, composed of metamorphic rocks - mainly of the gneisses - and magmatic - granites, diorites and their related -, form a zone of corrugated hills whose l´altitude grows d´ouest is, passing 200 m in the area of Hiesse to 368 m with Montrollet. C´est a zone privileged for the development of the meadows dedicated to l´élevage. With l´ouest, the Jurassic grounds of the north of the Aquitain basin level and are affected d´une rather weak slope towards south-west. They form plates with dominant limestone, d´une average altitude d´environ 175 m, notched by valleys less boxed than in the Eastern zone, and favourable with the cereal mixed-farming but also with the creation of artificial meadows. Dissolution on the surface of these limestones, sometimes on several meters d epaissor, released from not calcified materials (red clays, flint, rollers, ferruginous nodules, etc), leaving rare outcrops limestones. L´érosion of the granites can also release from great spreadings d´argiles, as in Abzac or Saint-Maurice-of-Lions. This diversity is reflected in construction materials. When their quality allows it, clays can be used either raw (ground architecture d´Oradour-Faded), or like transformed material (bricks, tiles).
Only the fine limestone of Benest allows a production of stones of size. D´importantes careers are on the commune of Pressac (Vienna), bordering on Pleuville, Epenède and Hiesse. Their yellow limestone is used as of XVe century for the decorative elements (mouluration of the framings, lintels, capitals, etc), in particular in l´est of Confolentais. The limestone cliffs released by the steepsided valley of l´Or with Champagne-Sheep also supported l´ouverture of careers, while sands and gravels are extracted from the granitic arenas and the alluvial terraces. The outcrops limestones in the Western half of the territory were exploited for the production of lime at the XIXe century: the rare lime kilns preserved are aujourd´hui in bad condition. The rocks metamorphic and the granite of l´est of Confolentais, inapt for the size, as for them are implemented in the more or less trimmed hardcore shape.

HYDROGRAPHIC CONTEXT
In Confolentais, Charente is a narrow course d´eau whose affluents, like l´Or, l´Argent, Transon or Lizonne, runs in widened enough valleys. Clain takes its source with Hiesse and n´est still here qu´un modest brook. Vienna, much broader and navigable, crosses the territory of the south towards north on approximately 25 km. Its risings were devastators jusqu´ in the middle of the XXe century. The Middle Ages, in addition to various fords, only two strengthened bridges, in Confolens and between Saint-Germain and Holy-Radegonde, allow his crossing. Three other bridges were built in second half of the XIXe century: in Confolens, downtown and in the south of the commune to connect Ansac-on-Vienna, and finally in Manot. The railroad l´a not crossed and skirts it on its left bank. The affluents of Vienna, from which some are gold bearing, incise the granitic base deeply. To l´ouest, l orientation of the courses d´eau follows the fractures of the basement, in particular the two major tectonic undulations north-western/south-eastern d orientation, that of Champagne-Sheep - Saint-Claud and especially that d´Alloue - Ambernac. On this last, several faults supported mineralizations as crystal with strong content silver exploited as of l´époque Gallic in Alloue and l´époque Roman with Ambernac. L´exploitation of the mines d´Alloue/Ambernac is attested by sources of the XVIIIe century. Has Alloue, a mining company is created in 1821, before l´abandon mine in 1829. It makes l´objet d´une last attempt d exploitation towards 1930 before d´être definitively closed due to insufficient profitability. At the XIXe century, they are 375 tons of lead and 16 tons of zinc which were produced, l´argent representing only small quantities. Many the other courses d´eau present on the territory required the construction of bridges and culverts, with technical solutions varied according to the nature of the obstacles.
At the XXe century appear concerns d alimentation out of drinking water. The distribution networks are set up gradually. Ten castles d´eau were built on varied models. They form very visible vertical elements in the landscape. Half-sunken reserves in top of hillocks supplement the drinking water device d´approvisionnement, as well as pumping stations, of collecting, treatment and various equipment d epuration of waste water.
The installation of the levels and the stoppings necessary to the operation of the mills modifies the aspect and the mode of the rivers. Channels and fitted d´étang make it possible to drain the surface water which streams on the impermeable granitic base.
The sources and the fountains strew the territory. Some were places of worship as of l Antiquity (Old man-Ruffec), d´autres still make aujourd´hui l´objet devotions. Some sources were carefully arranged. Constructions of communal laundrettes multiplied during the XIXe century, even at the beginning of the XXe century in the case of l´exceptionnel laundrette of Réchaudie, surmounted d´une terrace for the drying of the linen. The wells, individual or commun runs with a hamlet, are abundant. Their forms vary: the surmounted circular curbstones d´une metal structure abound with l´ouest, then qu´à l´est are more covered wells wood d´abris. Tractions of the roller are done by crank or, like often in the Limousin, by levers out of wooden. The well with beam of Montvallier is single in its kind in Confolentais, just as the construction which protects the fountain from the borough of Brillac. At XIXe and the XXe centuries, the municipalities installed many pumps, marks varied, on the common wells.

EXPLOITATION OF the GROUNDS
The cadastral sources of years 1830 specify the d exploitation modes of the grounds which the chart of Cassini in the middle of the XVIIIe century let see. Three great systems of setting in culture are distinguished then. On the grounds limestones, with l´ouest, the wood, of which the third consists of chestnut groves, occupy approximately the quarter of the taxable surface of these communes; the moors exploited for the gorses and the heathers are fairly developed whereas the meadows and pastures dedicated to l´élevage are not very wide. The arable lands form half of surfaces available, locally two thirds as in Chassiecq. That is translated in l´architecture by a clear prevalence of the barns with frontage on the wall gouttereau, of relatively modest size, rather dedicated to the storage of the grains and the straw. In the central zone, where the calcareous basement is acidified by the contributions of sands and granitic arenas of the crystalline base, the moors represent between a quarter and a third of the surfaces. They move back with the profit of l´élevage only about 1850, under l´influence of the agricultural trade unionism. Wood are definitely less present qu´à l´ouest, occupying less than 10% of the grounds, in particular in the valleys of Vienna and Transon. The meadows and pastures which represent the quarter of l´espace l´emportent here on the ploughings. This development of l´élevage to the detriment of the cultures requires moreover big spaces to store fodder and cattle sheds for the bovines and ovicaprinés. Vast frontage barn-cattle sheds out of pinion make it possible to meet these agricultural needs. With l´est, the granitic grounds are devoted for more third d´un to the meadows and pastures. Concurrently to l´élevage, the cultures represent a little more half of the agricultural surfaces. Everywhere, the vines then play a considerable part in l economy, occupying approximately one twentieth grounds jusqu´ with the crisis of will phylloxéra about 1880. Confolens is distinguished because of the needs related to the city. The vine covered 181 ha in 1826, that is to say 10,1% of the communal surface. Between the stocks plants with market-gardening vocation were also cultivated.
Second half of XIXe and the XXe centuries saw l´élevage developing, with an increase in l´ouest towards l´est of the natural and especially artificial meadows, energy of less d´un quarter of the surfaces with Chassiecq, Stopping or Old man-Ruffec jusqu´à more of two thirds of the grounds with Brillac, Oradour-Faded, Lesterps or Saint-Maurice-of-Lions. With the liking of the agricultural policies, the share of the bovines and sheep vary since around fifty d´années. The wooded surfaces are similar to this qu´elles were about 1830, even if they gained ground on the granitic grounds, thus spending 16% of the communal surface of Montrollet in 1830 to 35% in 2000. These wood constitute discontinuous units, generally low-size. They almost completely disappeared in the valleys from Charente and Transon as on the plates which dominate them.

TRANSPORTATION ROUTES
Confolentais is far away from the principal highway networks. Jusqu´au XVIIIe century, the sources do not make it possible to reconstitute with precision the network viaire. On the chart of Cassini, only figure a North-South road more or less parallel in Vienna. East-West L´axe, which corresponds to the Angouleme-Nevers way (become RN 151bis then RD 951), s´interrompt on this chart, in Alloue with l´ouest and of the parish of Saint-Maxime of Confolens and d´Esse with l´est.
Aujourd´hui, Confolentais remains with l´écart greater transportation routes: the RN 10, principal North-South way, from Paris to Bordeaux, passes to about fifteen kilometers communes more to l´ouest, whereas the RN 141, the Holy ones in Lyon by Limoges, skirts the territory to less d´une ten kilometers to the south. L´autoroute Nantes/Limoges would make it possible to disenclose the territory if l´option of its passage by Confolens were retained.
At the beginning of the XXe century, during the greatest extension of the railway network, Confolentais counted three lines, very with l´ouest of the Vienna river: Roumazières - Confolens - Vigeant (1887 and 1901), Ruffec - Roumazières (1907) and Angouleme - Champagne-Sheep - Confolens (1912 and 1913). This last narrow-gauge line, used by a tram from vapor, is due to the Mairat general adviser, of which it draws its name from “Small-Mairat”. It served Alloue, Benest, Champagne-Sheep, Chassiecq-Turgon and Hiesse and was closed in 1938.
-
ARCHITECTURE
The land registers of years 1830 mention for l´ensemble of Confolentais 5.904 houses, 73 mills, 26 tileries and a forging mill with iron with Montrollet. In 1999, l´Insee counted on its side 7.524 residences, including 1.388 in Confolens. On more than 5300 documentary files d´architecture established during l operation d´inventaire, 80% relate to houses and farms, 3% of the crosses and laundrettes. Castles and manors (2,5%) and establishments religious - abbey, priories, churches and vaults - (less than 1%) are minority good qu´ils conditioned a good portion of l implantation of l´habitat.
-
POPULATION AND EMPLOYMENT
Aujourd´hui, Confolentais counts 13.136 inhabitants. The average density is of 14,9 people per km ² with l´ouest of the territory, with d´importantes disparities: of 7,7 inhabitants per km ² with Old man-Ruffec with 43,6 with Champagne-Sheep. In fact the grounds limestones knew the fall of the strongest population since the middle of the XIXe century, losing two thirds of the inhabitants. In the center, the commune of Confolens shelters 150 inhabitants per km ². With l´est, the density is of 17,5 inhabitants per km ², with 12 to 13 inhabitants per km ² with Oradour-Faded, Montrollet and Saint-Christophe, and around 28 in Ansac-on-Vienna and Manot. Confolentais is well in France of the weak densities of population, at the point of meeting of little populated regional territories themselves: 42 inhabitants with the km ² in the Limousin, 64 in Poitou-Charentes, where 40% of the population reside in communes of density lower than 25 inhabitants than the km ². The population of the Community of communes includes/understands 33% people of more than 60 years (37% for the communes of l´ouest of Confolentais, 21% at the national level) and more of the third of the hearths to qu´une nobody counts.
In this primarily rural zone, only one company employs approximately 200 people and less than 10% of the other companies count more than 10 paid. L´agrandissement projected to l´abattoir of the Confolens, largest of France for the caprine ones, as well as the development of the dies of agricultural quality, in particular the sheep of Charentes-Poitou, should instigate rural l economy of Confolentais.
With l´heure of the country holidays, these preserved spaces attract not only the amateurs of excursion or fishing, but also many secondary residents (15% of the residences except Confolens, where this share n´est that of 2%). In 2001,5,5% of the hearths, of which about half in main home, are occupied by foreign nationals; more of two thirds are British, one on eight is Dutch. L´arrivée d´étrangers involves the rehabilitation d´une in addition left the old frame, in particular the unoccupied residences, which accounted for 15% of l´ensemble residences in 1999.

CULTURE AND TRADITIONS
An important programme of restoration of the “small” inheritance, operations d amelioration of l´habitat and trade, as of the developments specific but exemplary still accentuate l´attrait qu´exerce a rural frame of quality. Thus, a farm it is renovated in edge of the borough d´Esse to install there a restaurant, or house with a restored wood side with Lesterps and transform in house of the inheritance. A major stage as regards taking into account of the inheritance had been reached in 1993, when the town of Confolens s´était equipped d´une ZPPAU (protection zone of the architectural and urban heritage), tool which guarantees a controlled evolution of l urbanisation.
C´est within this privileged urban framework that the cultural event headlight is held of Confolentais, since 1958: the festival of “Arts and traditions of the world” of Confolens. Each year in the month d´août, of tens of d´amateurs thousands of folk dance flow into the city, attracted by this event with the international radiation. These last years, the territory accentuated its cultural offer through the “House of the Actor Maria Casarès”. Fleeing Francoism, Maria Casarès left l´Espagne with eleven years l´âge for s´installer in France. Become a recognized actress, it acquired the residence of the Alder with Allocates, which pointed out its Galicia to him native. With its death, in 1995, it yielded its field to the d´Alloue commune, in recognition with its ground d´accueil. The commune, the Community of communes and an association bearing the name of the actress made a place dedicated to the actors of it. The commun runs, pertaining from now on to the Community of communes, were rehabilitated in 2005 and 2006 and accommodate lodgings and a scenic space of creation and diffusion. After having organized, of 2000 to 2005, “Meetings d´été”, the House of the Actor can aujourd´hui receive actors and public very l´année.
This cultural opening is not done with the detriment of the traditions, whose force remains a characteristic of Confolentais, through the phenomenon of the ostensions. Still very alive in certain communes close to the Limousin (Saint-Junien, Rochechouart, etc), and practiced a long time in Brigueuil, Chabanais and Etagnac, these festivals d´origine pertaining to worship perdurent indeed, in Charente limousine, in two communes of Confolentais: Abzac and Esse.
The inventory of the cultural heritage
L´inventaire of the Community of communes of Confolentais was led between 2002 and 2006 jointly by the Community of communes and the regional Service of l´inventaire. L´enquête related to the built buildings of the twenty-six communes of the jusqu´aux territory years 1950 included, like on the movable objects of the not kept public edifices (churches, town halls, sub-prefecture of Confolens) and on l´environnement landscape. At the beginning of l´enquête, l´étude of the interiors of the residences was excluded. The data of the inventory are consultable today in the shape of an electronic file at the Community of communes, the information center of regional Service of the inventory and in each town hall, where a printed version of all the files of inventory of the commune is also available.
Elles will be soon consultable on Internet site of the Community of communes like on that of the Area Poitou-Charentes.
