The Community of Madrid is chaired by Esperanza Aguirre, first woman in Spain to occupy such a function. The election of May 27th, 2007 reinforced the presence of the Popular party (PP) at the regional Parliament since this one gains ten seats while passing to 67 while PSOE loses three seats (45) and Izquierda Unida (IU) gains two of them (11).

History

The Community of Madrid was a not very important area at the time of the Roman Empire: it was a " zone of passage" where the legions rested rebellion on standby. Before the province of Madrid being one of the five provinces of the historical area of News-Castille (current the Castille it Sleeve), the Community of Madrid was instituted in autonomous community " monoprovinciale" March 1st 1983 during the approval of its statute of autonomy, one of the last to constitute during the Spanish Democratic transition. Among the reasons of its constitution in autonomous community are the great differences economic and demographic between the province of Madrid and the other provinces surrounding, but also the fact of lodging the capital of the State.
