The the Commonwealth of Philippines was the political designation of the Filipino between 1935 and 1946, period during which the archipelago was a the Commonwealth the United States. The United States was in possession of Philippines since the Guerre Spanish-American which had shown the defeat of Spain in 1898. The Traité of Paris in 1898 had officialized the statute of the archipelago.
During the years 1930, political steps led the country to adopt a new legislation then a constitution. This period transistoire was to extend over 10 years. During this amount of time, the foreign affairs, monetary management and defense remained the responsibility of the United States. A president, Manuel L. Quezon was named with the head of the provisional government. At the dawn of the Second world war, the country was to take up several challenges: economy to be renovated, diplomatic relations tended in the Far East, preparation of an autonomous army, etc
The Japanese invasion forced the government to be exiled at the beginning on the island of Corregidor then in the second time definitively to leave the archipelago to take refuge in Australia. The American victories during the Guerre of the Pacific allowed the progressive reconquest of the islands. Regarded as an ally, Philippines were again under American control in 1944.
The US president Harry S. Truman stated the independence of the “Republic of Philippines” the July 4th 1946.
