Summary

In spring 1914, Laurent Pasquier became, at 33 years, a respected department head of the National institute of Biology. However a conflict violate will oppose it to Larminat, the director of the Institute, about Hippolyte Birault, an agent of proud and unable laboratory, that Pasquier renvoit without the agreement of its superior. Following the publication of its point of view in a right-wing policy newspaper radical naively made by Laurent Pasquier, Larminat will break out against him, while seeking to publicly discredit it by means of a rageuse and unworthy press campaign. The scientist, forsaken by his fellow-members, only fights against the policy as for the organization and with the vision of the future of science like for the defense of his honor and his name. In same time the father Pasquier, Raymond - after a new professional sudden change, which carries out it a time to create, under a name of loan, a cabinet council of treatment against pathological timidity - leaves the family hearth to live a passion with his young secretary and to make a tour in Africa. Laurent, with the roof of the distress, finds however the support and the love of Jacqueline Bellec, girl of a powerful press baron of left. In the month of July 1914, the war approaches but the grondements of Europe do not reach the ears of Laurent Pasquier very limed to struggle without success against the cabal which destroys it gradually. Constrained to give its resignation, it gives up violently the vocation of its life and the trade which animated it, and is seen mobilized to leave to the face.
