The novel is initially appeared in the form of serial in the Press . The action occurs between 1784 and 1785.This novel presents a idealized portrait of the Reine Marie-Antoinette but it shows also the " folie" nobility at that time, this one is completed on the " beginning of the fin" of this nobility.
This novel is the second of the series of the Mémoires of a doctor, preceded by Joseph Balsamo, followed by Ange Pitou and the Countess of Charny.
Sources
The first chapters of the novel, which put in scene a dinner in the old marshal of Richelieu, are inspired by a text of Jean-François of the Toothing-stone, Prophécie de Cazotte . In this passage, the count de Cagliostro predicted to the various guests (Perugia, the Countess of Barry, Condorcet or Gustave III of Sweden (the count Haga) the fine tragedy which awaits them, as well as the execution of Louis XVI. This Prolepse throws on the intrigue a tragic lighting, since the reader already knows that the efforts of the protagonists, in particular of the queen, to prove their innocence are dedicated to the failure.-
