The Cleans
The Cure is a British group of Rock and new wave , formed in 1976 with Crawley in the Sussex of the West, which marked the Années 1980 and 1990. The current formation is made up of the historical figure of the group: the leader Robert Smith (author, type-setter and singer), of Porl Thompson with the guitar, Simon Gallup with low and Jason Cooper with the battery.
Biography
Initially named Mischievousness in 1976, then EasyCure in 1977, The Cure is born officially thereafter, in 1978. The trio is composed of friends of college of Crawley (in Sussex), with Michael Dempsey with the low , Lol Tolhurst with the battery and Robert Smith with the Guitare and the Chant. It is Robert Smith, which writes all the words and the majority of the musics of the group. The originality of the first 45 T Killing year Arab, inspired of the novel the Foreigner of Albert Camus, ensures a beginning of notoriety with the grace group in particular to the alternate fanzines. They are quickly signed by Chris Parry, ex-manager of the Jam, who creates for them the independent label Fiction Records , to which they will remain faithful until the publication of the dvd Trilogy, in 2003.The Cure is regarded with Bauhaus and Siouxsie & The Banshees as a major influence of the Gothic Mouvement, even if Robert Smith always made fun ironically of those which classify it in this mobility. Their inimitable musical style, the development of dark, clear-obscure environments atmospheric and/or melancholic persons a long time absent from the rock'n'roll since the end of the progressive rock'n'roll, like their particular sound of guitar, look and the personality " lunaire" and fragile of Robert Smith, itself inspired of the leader of the transitory group but outstanding Joy Division, influence several generations of musicians.
After a first album with the post-punk sound very minimalist, Three Imaginary Servant boys (1979), The Cure will produce successively three darker albums: the very atmospheric one but still relatively pop Seventeen Second (1980), Faith (1981), more gray and despaired, and fulgurating it and definitively black Pornography (1982), which evokes shovel-mixes death, the suicide and introspection. For the enlightened amateurs of Cure and the critics rock'n'roll who however did not always vote by plebiscite the group, Pornography is a chief of work absolute and unequalled, which reaches besides the Top 10 in England. The round which follows the exit of this album however reveals testing, indeed the climate melancholic person which surrounds the shows of the English formation for some time reached there already there its paroxysm, and much think (of which Smith himself) that Cure will not survive it. Besides these three discs represent what one calls the " Trilogy glacée" group.
The Cure chooses then in 1983 for a lighter musical turning (some will say " survie" for the group), initially with three individual with success ( Let' S go to bed , The Walk and The Lovecats ) more " abordables" coming to counterbalance the environment of the three preceding albums. Then always in 1983, R. Smith explores new horizons, more experimental and psychedelic, which will announce the continuation of its adventures. It conceives at the side of Steve Severin, a concept in the name of The Glove (name inspired by a character of the film Yellow submarine of Beatles). They leave some individual, and an album Blue Sunshine . Robert Smith also benefits from his spare time to become the official guitarist of Siouxsie and the Banshees: he records with them live the Nocturne filmed with the Royal Albert Hall of London, then the following year the album studio Hyaena .
As regards Cure, with many changes of line-up, discs more pop appear: The Signal (1984) and especially The Head one the Door (1985), this last coinciding with the explosion of their popularity in Europe - and in particular in France - and their success growing with the the United States but also in Australia (where the group has enjoyed a beautiful notoriety already for a few years), thanks to the international impact of the 45 turns In between days and Close to me . Titles which one finds, inter alia, on the compilation published in 1986 in the form of assessment after almost ten years of existence, which is entitled Standing one has Beach (and Staring At the Sea for its version CD with the slightly different list of the pieces). And for the anecdote, it is as at this same time as the look with the " Cure" fact many followers among the fans a little everywhere on planet, a made particular look of haircuts hirsutes and appropriate dresses with the endorsement, which has already raised the group (and in particular Smith) for a few years…
KIS Me KIS Me KIS Me , double album with more varied sonorities, follows in 1987, these are still a great success, which definitively makes them know with the the United States. In particular thanks to the tubes Why Can' T I Be You , and especially Just like Heaven actually based on a Instrumental, brought to be credits, that Smith and his assistants had composed some time earlier in particular for and at the request of the emission " Children of the rock'n'roll " , diffused on Antenna 2 (future France 2) at the beginning and in the middle of the Years 1980, and which always supported the group.
The album Disintegration in 1989 mark a return to a darker music and melancholic person, pointing out the period 1980-1982 of the English formation. On this album, its Cure is spread: long pieces melancholic persons, his of inimitable guitar (but often copied), basic use with 6 cords, subtle arrangements. The 45 turns Lullaby and Lovesong are a great success in the international classifications, in particular for the last quoted song which is found classified #2 with the E. - U., making album one of great successes of Cure in this country. A world tour (the " follows then; Prayer Tour") from long life whose width and intensity remain still engraved in many memories, and constitutes for much one of the best public services of Cure.
After a disc of remixes accommodated more or less well by criticism, the group returns three years later with the album Wish which is found respectively classified as of its exit # 1 with the the United Kingdom and #2 in America (even if in France, success for the first time for several years, has been less marked). After this triumph, one more dubious period follows during which the group, in perpetual evolution on the level of its manpower, seems to know a pause in its notoriety, while keeping its immense procession of fans faithful divided to the four corners of planet. Thus the album Wild Mood Swings in 1996, relatively experimental, weak and décousu meets a mitigated success. But Bloodflowers mark the return of the famous " its Cure" , that of Wish and Disintegration. Moreover, Robert Smith presents this album like the third of a trilogy including/understanding Pornography and Disintegration. It should be noted that this album is calmest of the group.
The last published album, The Cleans in 2004, opens the door with a harder sound and an inspiration drawn from the independent Rock. Delirious songs (" Alt.End" , " Taking Off" , " Before Three" , " I Don' T Know What' S Going On") there others côtoient violent (" Custom Gold Them" , " Lost" , " The Promise"), depressive (" Going Nowhere" , " Anniversary") or psychedelic (" Labyrinth"). This disc joins again with success with large scales on the two sides of the Atlantique where the album is classified without concern with Signal 10.
Retrospectively and at its beginnings, The Cure quickly became one of the florets of the new wave British tendency melancholic person, with Bauhaus, Siouxsie & The Banshees, (group to which Robert Smith contributed as a guitarist in parallel of The Cure), Joy Division, Echo and the bunnymen, Depeche Mode, New Order, etc
Tiny room to a solitary project since ten years and having undergone several changes of line-up, for some the group becomes a pretext with the compositions more or less inspired of Robert Smith. However, during the thirty last years, The Cure knew to explore with an astonishing vitality of the different universes (Cold wave, Indie rock'n'roll, pop Noisy, pop, goth rock'n'roll, prog rock'n'roll…)but while remaining new wave and while developing its personality and its originality (incarnated exclusively by Robert Smith).
The group also influenced many musicians and constitutes today a solid reference in the world of the pop music/rock'n'roll.
Robert Smith, for its part, always acknowledged various influences, such as Jimi Hendrix, David Bowie, Captain Beefheart, Echo and the Bunnymen, etc
Currently, Cure polishes a new album which should leave at the beginning of year 2008.
A European round will follow in February /mars 2008.
