The Chieftains

The Chieftains are a group of music Irish founded in 1962 known to play and popularize the Irish traditional Musique.

Biography

The group recorded many albums of traditional music as well instrumental as sung. Beyond the rates/rhythms of dances, they will take as a starting point old type-setters like Turlough O' Carolan, and will produce a varied music, of a particular sonority. Their repertory extends from the song of pub to the symphonic work made up for the Cinéma.

They do not hesitate to enrich their music by contributions by various cultures, aunsi that a big number of collaborations with musicians or famous singers of all musical origins. They in particular played with Van Morrison, Elvis Costello, Tom Jones, Sinéad O' Connor, Roger Waters, the Rolling Stones, Kepa Junkera and Akiko Yano. They also showed the influence of the Irish music on the country by producing several albums with Nashville with famous artists.

In 1975, the group gained much in popularity after having played Women off Ireland for the original soundtrack of the film Barry Lyndon of Stanley Kubrick.

Their fame enables them to take part in “historical” concerts:

  • in 1979: a concert in front of Jean-Paul II joins together: 1.35 million people with Dublin
  • in 1983 at the time of a round in China, it is the first Western group to play on the Great wall
  • in 1983, it is the first group to give a concert in the Capitole to Washington.

They gained six Grammy awards and were nominated there eighteen times.

Members of the group

Paddy Moloney is the leader of the group. It composes and arranges the majority of the pieces of it. The group changed several times of formation, an hard core remaining places from there throughout its history to ensure its perenniality. Since 1976 the members are:

  • Matt Molloy (Flute, chock whistle)
  • Kevin Conneff (bodhrán, voice)
  • Seán Keane (Fiddle, chock whistle)
  • Martin Fay (fiddle, bones)
  • Beautiful Derek (Toothing-stone, Piano, Oboe)
In 2002 Fay withdrew itself from the group and Bell is deceased.
