History

Viscounts of Thouars

The history of Chaize is especially related to the Viscounts of Thouars. With the XI° century, Aimery IV made there build a castle and a Priory with the church St Nicolas. Chaize which owes its name with its founders (the House of the Viscount) was a time their capital (1104 1124) when Geoffroi III resided at it. The borough developed around the castle and of the priory, forming two parishes until the revolution, two districts still distinct and separated by the valley from Marillet.

The Middle Ages with the Revolution

Castle of the Viscounts of Thouars, remain only the western ramparts; priory, the wall is. The church St Nicolas knew many vicissitudes. The Protestants burn it, on March 15th, 1568. The bell-tower, the apse and the arms of the transept crumbled. They will never be raised: the current bell-tower is set up in 1757. During the revolution, Chaize becomes chief town of canton. The majority of the noble houses are sold like national goods. Because of his central position, Napoleon thinks of establishing the prefecture there, then prefers the Rock, village of less importance.

Of XIVème at our days

With the beginning of the XIX°, the artisanal activity is developed: tanners, tisserands. Are also exploited slate kaolin and quarries. About 1870, the railway allows the development of the trade, the cattle fairs in particular. The XX° century saw Chaize péricliter, but the population increases again because of the fastening of Limouzinière, of the proximity of the chief town, and an artisanal and commercial zone in the sector of the Madness. The residential zones extend to the periphery from the old borough.
