The Châtillon-on-Loire


the Châtillon-on-Loire is a common French, located in the department of the Loiret and the area Center.

The double denomination is attested at least since the medium of XVIe century.

Heraldic

Of azure to the dextrochère of complexion, driving sinistral side, vêtu of a sleeve monacale to the naturalness, holding a gold stick twisted of a branch of money ivy, accompanied with dextral by a flower by gold lily also and with sinistral by a castle by three turns by same.

Geography

The city is located on Southern bank of the the Loire at 5 km at the east of Briare. It is to 80 km in the east of Orleans and to 160 km in the south of Paris.

History

Its NAME comes from Castellio (small fortress).

The first mention of the city speaks about a fortification with Xe century.

Its history is marked also by the wars of religion with the construction of a temple in 1596 (third in France) and its destruction in 1684 under the order of Louis XIV. Before the creation of the tubular bridge, the side channel in the Loire crossed the the Loire through two locks, known as of Mantelot and of the Roofs . Between 1836 and 1896

A suspended bridge crosses the Loire in this commune. It was to be inaugurated by Pierre Chevallier, mayor of Orleans but this last was cut down by his wife.
