Before 1790, Châteauneuf of the Rhone was a community of the election, subdelegation and seneschalsy of Montélimar, forming a parish of the diocese of Saint Paul Three Castles, of which the church dedicated to Saint Nicolas ( ecclesia of Castro Novo 1250 ) and said them belonged to the abbot of Ainay in his capacity as prior of the place. As for the temporal seigniory of Châteauneuf of the Rhone, it belonged to the bishops of Fish ponds, which high lords of this ground since 1206, acquired some in the 1264 and 1295 useful field of Châteauneuf.
