The Castle of Otranto

the Castle of Otranto, Gothic history , The Castle off Otranto, has Gothic Story in English, is a novel of Horace Walpole published in 1764 and whose action proceeds with Otranto, in the Salento, with the Southern of the Italy.

One can regard the Castle of Otranto as the first Roman Gothic, kind which was going to become extremely popular in Europe towards the end of the 18th century and until the first decades of the next century.

Reception

Walpole presented the original edition of the Château of Otranto like the translation of a manuscript printed to Naples in 1529 lately redécouvert in the library “of an old catholic family of the north of England”. This manuscript was supposed to derive from an older history still which could go up until the Croisade S. Walpole having, in the following editions, recognized its role in the composition of work, it was scorned per many criticisms which, believing it then authenticates, had spoken of it to in praise as well as theirs “clever translator”.

Subject

the Castle of Otranto starts with the death of Conrad, the son of Manfred, the very same day of its marriage. Because of the political implications of the marriage, Manfred decides to divorce his Hippolita wife and to marry Isabella, been engaged of Conrad. An antique prophecy affirms however that the castle and the seigniory on Otranto will be lost for its holders when the true owner becomes too tall to live it. The second marriage of Manfredi will be disturbed by a series of supernatural events like the appearance of oversize members, the phantoms, mysterious blood and a true prince.
