The Car

the Car was the principal daily newspaper Sport French yew of the October 16th 1900 with the August 17th 1944, date of its prohibition. Founded under the title the Car-Bicycle (1900-1903), this title set up in particular the Tour de France. It was struck of interdict to the Release for collaboration. Sporting daily newspaper, the Car reserved however some columns with general information since 1937. This characteristic obliged it to publish German official statements of war in particular. Eighteen months later, the Team will take over the Car .

History

The daily newspaper is founded under the title the Car-Bicycle by the marquis De Dion, anti-supporter of Dreyfus, because of the standpoint supporters of Dreyfus of the sporting famous daily newspaper the Bicycle . A war with dead engages then between the two titles. the Car-Bicycle is inclined at the time of the first sleeve by losing in justice its title, too near to that of its competitor. The newspaper becomes the Car the January 16th 1903. Cycling is then the sport king in France, and this loss could have proven to be decisive. However, the Car reacts as of this year 1903 by creating the Tour de France on an idea of Géo Lefèvre, thus associating its name with that of most prestigious of the tests cyclists. the Bicycle will never recover from this innovation and gives up on November 1st 1904. The sporting daily newspapers such Le Monde sportsman and the Sports , know the same fate. Another competitor will try the daily adventure with the beginning of the year 1930, the Echo of the sports , but this last reaches a maximum with 65.000 specimens sold per day and quickly takes a weekly periodicity in 1932.

the Car is a general sports title which innovates as of its beginnings by making the good share with the results, even foreign, contrary to the Vélo . Henri Desgrange, died in 1940, was the director of this title. Victor Goddet formed with Desgrange a complementary binomial. Goddet managed finances, while Desgrange, journalist of great talent, directed the drafting. Jacques Goddet enters to the newspaper after the death of his/her father. He is only twenty years old. Formed by Desgranges, he will be the spiritual son.

Second half of the years 1930 is marked by a compressing of the sales of the title because of the competition of the daily newspaper of the evening general practitioner Paris-Evening , which proposed a copious treatment of the sport. Thus, as of the evening even, Paris-Evening published the account of the stage of the Tour de France run in the afternoon while it was necessary to wait the next morning to discover the new number of the Car . In order to resist this competition, the Car obtains the March 27th 1937 a heading concerning general information entitled “To know quickly”. It is this heading which poses the most problem with the newspaper during the Occupation. If the newspaper ceased the organization of its tests headlights like the Tour de France, it leaves throughout the war and under German control publishes in its general information of the clearly Vichyist texts. This attitude explains logic prohibition of the title to the Release. Jacques Goddet rebounds while using of its relationships to Resistance to launch a new title, the Team , direct heir to the Car . Desgrange does not know the infamy of prohibition. He dies as of the August 16th 1940.
