The Canadian Encyclopedia

the Canadian Encyclopedia is a Encyclopédie which wants to be “  the information source on the Canada best founded and more complète  ”. Available free on line, it is at the same time in English and French and includes some 14.000 articles in each language on a large variety of subjects of which the Histoire, the Popular culture, events, people, localities, the Politique, the Art, First Nations, the Sport S and the Science.

The Web site also gives access to the Encyclopédie of the music to Canada , the Encyclopédie junior (in English only), the articles of the magazine Maclean' S and a chronology of the Canadian and international events.

History

Canada was without encyclopedia since the Encyclopedia Canadiana of 1957. In answer to this situation, Mel Hurtig, a convinced Canadian nationalist, lance a project to create a Canadian Encyclopedia entirely new.

The editor-in-chief James Harley Marsh recruits more 3  000 authors to write the articles of them. The first edition is published in three volumes in 1985 (ISBN 088830269X) and is a Livre with success in Canada (150  000 units sold in six months). A revised edition and aggrandie are published in 1988 (ISBN 0888303262). The company publishes later The Junior Encyclopedia off Canada (ISBN 0888303343).

In 1995 is published the first edition in cédérom (ISBN 0771020414).

Since 2006, the Historica Foundation, in not-lucrative goal, publishes the encyclopedia on line free.
