The the Camargue (in Occitan Of Provence: , Camarga according to the traditional standard or Camargo according to the Norme mistralienne) is the marshy space formed by the Delta of the the Rhone.

History

to be supplemented: evolution of the delta, Roman exploitation and of the Middle Ages, transformation of the men (damming up, protection against the sea,…), etc…

Territory

It is a terrestrial space of 145.300 ha in the south of France, located geographically between the two principal arms of the delta of the the Rhone and the sea the Mediterranean. One can extend it to the East until the flat of Crau, to the west until Acute-Dead and north until Beaucaire. It thus extends on the departments from the Rhone delta and the Gard.

3 parts thus are distinguished:

  • the Petite Camargue in the west of the Small-Rhone,
  • the Large Camargue, between the two arms of the Rhone,
  • the Plan of the Borough, in the east of the Large-Rhone.
In its center is the pond of Vaccarès, the part located along the sea is bordered of salted ponds.

The Camargue is primarily in the territory of the communes of Arles, which is of this vastest fact common of metropolitan France, and of the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer.

This area is made up of two parts: north with arable lands and the south made up of marsh and plans of salt water which form a ecosystem particulier.
This ecosystem presents a Végétation mainly made up of Salicorne S and plants halophilous (i.e. plants which support salt water). It is also a field of breeding of horses and Taureau X, culture of the Riz and exploitation of the salt (saline Marais).
This fauna and particular Flore involved the creation of a national Natural reserve on 13.117 hectares (1927) and of a Regional natural park on 30.000 hectares (1970).
The annual evaporation is more important than the rainy contribution, the Fleuve brings the difference thus avoiding to the area being burned by salt.

Regional natural park of the Camargue

The Regional natural park of the Camargue was created in 1970.

Its future

The coasts of the Camargue undergo a transformation intense and contrasted, with maritime deepening reachs around the Holy-Marry-of-the-sea and opposite Faraman, and of the zones of fattening mainly towards the mouth of Large the the Rhone, Beauduc and the Phare of Espiguette (Grau-of-King). It is necessary also to add that all the delta with its lowlands starts to undergo the effects of climate warming: increase of salt related to the rise of the marine level, etc
The Camargue is also a stake of many political and economic interests concerned with multiple interlocutors: natural park of the Camargue, ministries, property developers, developers of the territory, Saline of the South, stockbreeders, farmers, hunters, professionals of tourism, organizations of protection against the Rhone, municipalities of Arles and the Saintes-Maries-de-la-Mer, regional capacity,….

Thus, if the future of the Camargue depends with means-term on the impacts related to the warming, with short-term its destiny is in the hands of actors who do not have all the safeguard of this space like objective.

Rice growers and salt impose a hydrology of the opposite delta on the natural mode, which does not support the conservation of the most original species. But a thing is sure: whatever the activities - safeguarding of the medium, drives out, cut of the reed, growth of rice, and their requirements out of water, this one is from now on in the center of all covetousnesses HTTP: /www.journaldelenvironnement.net/fr/document/detail.asp?id=6786&idThema=7&idSousThema=42&type=JDE&ctx=2

With the doors of the Camargue and Petite Camargue

In the Camargue

The Camargue in its most restrictive direction lies between the two arms of the delta of the Rhone

In Petite Camargue

The Petite Camargue corresponds, in the west of the current delta, a zone in the past occupied by arms disappeared from the Rhone which sprinkled the Languedocienne coast, between Beaucaire with the sea.
the historical time kept some traces of this configuration, probably with a delta having already begun its swing towards the East (during time, the mouths of the Rhone indeed moved of West in Is):

  • the Spanish Branch evoked by the Latin authors
  • and more recently with the Middle Ages, the arm which passed under Saint-Gilles before being lost in the ponds connected to the sea on the side of the current Large-Mound or Maguelonne.
Nowadays, the Small Rhone in way of alluvial deposit perhaps considered as a remainder of this historical branch, at least in its layout higher of Arles than Saint-Gilles.
