The Business Sunflower

the Business Sunflower ( adventures of Tintin: The Business Sunflower , Hergé, 1956) is the 18th album of Cartoon of the adventures of Tintin .

Synopsis

The Professor Tournesol has just developed a new weapon using the Ultrason S, which destroys the objects out of glass. If it had suddenly been sophisticated to destroy another thing that glass, this invention could become a particularly dangerous weapon. On a Swiss journey in for a congress, Tournesol is continued by secret agents edges which want to obtain the plans of its invention. Tintin and the Captain Haddock, fearing that Tournesol does not have troubles, goes there to find it. But Tournesol is finally removed by the Edges…

Summary

Whereas Tintin and Haddock are about to release it, Tournesol is made remove by spies syldaves. A memorable continuation in Lancia follows led by a megalomaniac Italian. The plane of the kidnappers is intercepted, but Tournesol is recaptured by the Edges. Tintin and the Haddock captain thus flies away for Szohôd, capital of Bordurie. With the assistance of Castafiore, they seize papers of the Colonel Sponsz, chief of the police force, which will enable them to release Tournesol, which they do while being disguised; after a race towards the border (of which a part in the tank), they are of return to Moulinsart, where Tournesol destroys its plans.

Context

Published in 1956, the Business Sunflower sees the reappearance of the competition Syldavie - Bordurie. This time, it incarnates the communist opposition of the blocks then and capitalist, into full Cold war (Some see in Plekszy-Gladz a caricature of Stalin).

Around work

This album is also regarded as the technical masterpiece of Hergé. One will notice the splendid graphics of all the bordurienne part of the album with the omnipresence of the stylized form of a Moustache in handlebar (probably that of the Head of the State Plekszy-Gladz): uniforms, decoration, official buildings, bumper of the vehicles, etc (the moustache being an element essential to the stereotype of the Dictator). The expression “By the moustache of Plekszy-Gladz” is the swearword bordurien besides par excellence. the Business Sunflower is an album marked by its hyperrealism. For example, rather than to inform itself using reviews, newspapers, books etc Hergé went to the site to draw the road leading to Nyon.

Anecdotes

This album is only of which a part proceeds in Suisse. One sees there for example the Cornavin station of Geneva as well as the Cornavin hotel where one currently finds statues of Tintin and Milou in the entry. The house of professor Topolino to the address “road of Saint-Cergue” in Nyon always exists but it is not with the 57bis, but to the 113. In Switzerland, this house is simply called “house of Tintin”.

In this album, Hergé was represented on the label appearing the grid of Moulinsart attacked of curious after the strange phenomena which open the history (page 13). It is drawn cigarette with the mouth as a journalist, interviewing a witness. Hergé also makes a wink with Edgar P. Jacobs by representing it disguised in Méphisto, at the time of the meeting of the opera. Edgar P. Jacobs, in its beginnings, had collaborated with Hergé.

When Tintin and the others flee in the tank, Haddock turns to Tournesol to tell him " Saved, Tryphon! " but the bubble comes from Sunflower.

This album was adapted in the animated series of 1962. The episode had gone up to be diffused in a format cinema and is sometimes describe like a film with whole share.

Translations in Gruérien patois

Afére Tournesol is the name of the translation in Patois Gruérien of the cartoon of Tintin the Business Sunflower. It was published in 2007 at the time of the centenary of the birth of Hergé. The translation is the work of Joseph Comba, president of the Company of Patoisans of the Gruyere.
