the Bonnières-on-Seine is a common department of the Yvelines, in the area Île-de-France, in France, located at approximately 14 km in the west of Mantes-the-Pretty. It is a small town Industrie lle equipped with a river Port on the Seine with 66 kilometers downstream from Paris.

The name of “Bonnières” would come from bonnier , term of Former French indicating an agrarian measurement, which was equivalent to more or less a hectare, with large variations according to the areas.

The inhabitants are called Bonniérois.

Geography

The commune of the Bonnières-on-Seine is in the North-West of Yvelines, with approximately fifteen kilometers in the west of Mantes-the-Pretty and with eleven kilometers in the south-east of Vernon (the Eure). The city is built in edge of the the Seine, on left bank of the river and in the concavity of a Méandre.

The communes bordering are Freneuse in the North-East, Rolleboise in the east, the Rosny-on-Seine in south-east, Villeneuve-in-Chevrie in south-west, Jeufosse in the west and, in north, Bennecourt on Right Bank of the Seine.

The communal territory, relatively not very wide (near to the average yvelinoise of 712 hectares) extends on approximately five kilometers in the North-South direction. It includes/understands in north a low part, between 20 and 30 meters of altitude, very urbanized, and towards the south, includes part of the plate of the Mantois. It is delimited in the east by a boxed ravine, the valley Guyon, dug by a tributary brook of the Seine.

This territory remained rural to 75%, with a strong proportion, approximately 50%, timbered surfaces, mainly in the south-eastern part of the territory, the prolongation of the regional forest of Rosny. Built urban space accounts for 18% of the total surface area and concentrates in the north of the territory, in edge of the Seine. The zones of economic activities cover 24 hectares, mainly along the river.

The road communications are primarily assured by the Trunk road 13 Paris-Caen-Cherbourg, which crosses the commune in the East-West direction, which is disconnected in western limit of the commune, secondary road 915 (ex- Trunk road 15) for Rouen. A road bridge in two parts, pressed on the Large Island, ensures the connection with northern bank of the Seine. Towards the south, secondary road 37 serves the villages of the plate.

The commune is crossed to the south of the city by the Autoroute of Normandy (A13). An half-exchanger gives access (only vers/ou coming from Paris) to the center of Bonnières, thanks to a slip road of four kilometers borrowing the valley Guyon. For the connections towards the west, the access is done by the exchanger of Limekiln, accessible to six kilometer in the west from Bonnières by the RN 13. Bonnières being beyond the barrier of Toll of Buchelay, the access to the city is paying from Paris, contrary to the remainder of Yvelines. This situation, considered by the town councilors as a handicap with the economic development of the city and its area, is the subject of a debate. It is considered, inter alia, to move the turn pike towards the west.

On the railway level, the line Paris-Rouen it Havre crosses the north of the commune, along the Seine. The city has for the traffic of the travellers of a station ensuring of the connections the suburbs type towards Paris-Saint-Lazare. A connection goods serves the industrial park.

The industrial park also has quays arranged along the channeled Seine.

A Path of great excursion, the GR. 26 (Paris-Deauville by southern bank of the Seine) crosses the commune in the south-eastern direction - the North-West. A marked out diverticulum connects it to the station.

Bonnières made industrial great strides at the 19th century, with the refinery of Pétrole of Jules Micheaux (which Zola took as a starting point in its novel Work ) and the iron-foundry Saint-Éloi of the Belgian industrialist Louis Piret.

Inauguration of the Station in 1843 (line of Paris-Saint-Lazare to Rouen). The factory Singer (american company of sewing machines) is built in 1934 and is closed in 1968.

Architectural heritage

Church Our-Lady-of-the-Nativity : old Vault of the Blessed Virgin of Bonnières, it was devoted the January 4th 1740. Construction out of stone and white coating was completed on January 2nd, 1740, grace in particular to gifts of the bishop of Chartres and the duke of Rochefoucauld. The covered square slate bell-tower was completed in 1753. In 1763, a high skirting was brought to the chorus, which was decorated into 1924 with decorative paintings. The original stained glasses completely disappeared during the allied bombardments of spring 1944. New figurative stained glasses, on the topic of the twenty mysteries of the life of Jesus, Marie and the four chains, are installed as from August 2004. Their design is the fact of a monk of the priory of Chérence (Val-d'Oise).

Arcades of the castle of Beuron : they are vestiges of the frontage of the castle of Beuron, which was built on the current territory of the commune of Perdreauville and which belonged to Sully. The municipality made install, in 1975, these three arcades in the public garden opposite the church.

Property of Marcel Sembat and Georgette Agutte : located in a park of 6.805 m ², was the subject of an acquisition by the municipality which wished to restore it and install cultural equipment there.

sepulchral Alley : it is about a burial in pit of the Neolithic time, a depth of approximately 1,8 meters, discovered in May 1950, at the time of work of digging of sewers. It contained many human bones, including 38 craniums, as well as various objects, tools out of flint (scrapers, blades) and elements of ornaments, in particular made up of teeth of wild animals. It was with the current site of the arts center Louis Jouvet.

Natural heritage

The municipality acquired in 1959 the wood of Houssaye, located in the south-east of the commune. This forest, of an total surface area of 95 hectares, is managed by ONF. It was cut down by 11 hectares in 1965 to leave the passage to a13 highway which crosses it in trench, in its center, physically cutting it in two parts.

Personalities related to the commune

  • Marcel Sembat (1862-1922), appointed socialist, Minister for Labor, friend of Jaurès, was born in Bonnières where it resided all his life. It is buried in the communal cemetery.
  • Georgette Agutte (1867-1922), painter and sculptor, wife of Marcel Sembat, it committed suicide the very same day of died of this last. It had its workshop with Bonnières. It is buried in the communal cemetery.
  • Louis Piret, industrial Belgian, ironmaster to Thy-the-Castle close to Charleroi, installed an iron and steel plant with Bonnières in August 1915.
  • Jacques Carlu (1890-1976), architect, born in Bonnières, is in particular the author of the palate of Chaillot and the palate of NATO in Paris.
  • Jean Carlu (1900-1997), advertizing draftsman and poster artist, brother of the precedent, also born in Bonnières.
