BBC had required of Peter Watkins to carry out a credible simulation of the shortly after an nuclear attack on England, highly of topicality in 1965. She then refused to distribute the result, very documented and realistic, therefore very alarmist and with the antipodes of the British political declarations.

A gap of the contract of production made it possible film all the same to leave in rooms. It was rewarded for a Oscar and special price for the Festival for Venice, which for a simulation is a prowess. It also gained a considerable success in rooms in spite of its duration of 48 mn.
