The Biro

the Biro is a municipality in the regional Municipalité of county of Rimouski-Neigette to the Quebec (Canada), located in the administrative area of the Low-Saint-Laurent.

History

In 1675, Charles Denys de Vitré obtains Gouverneur Frontenac the Seigniory of the Biro. Wishing to exploit as soon as possible the resources present on his grounds and to conform to the law which requires that he live these same grounds, the sior of Glazed engaged a certain Jean Gaignon, who became the first inhabitant of the Biro.

  • 1535 : Travel of Jacques Cartier to the Canada during which it stops in Le Havre of the Biro;
  • 1603 : Champlain remains in its turn in Le Havre of the Biro. It names the culminating point of current the National park of the Biro the Pic Champlain;
  • 1675 : Sior Charles Denis de Vitré obtains Gouverneur Frontenac the concession of the Seigniory of the Biro;
  • 1680 : Jean Gaignon, first colonist to be settled in the Seigniory of the Biro;
  • 1688 : Charles Aubert of Chesnaye, merchant of Quebec, buys the Seigniory of the Biro;
  • 1702 : François Aubert of Chesnaye inherits the Seigniory;
  • 1750 : Ignace François Gabriel Aubert of Chesnaye, wire of François becomes Seigneur;
  • 1766 : Ram Marie-Anne Estrigant of St-Martin (wife of Ignace François Gabriel Aubert of Chesnaye) and rams Charlotte Aubert d' Albergatti become owners of the Seigniory of the Biro;
  • 1810 : Construction of the Royale road connecting Three-Spray and Rimouski;
  • 1830, February 18th: Canonical inauguration of the church Holy-Cecile of the Biro;
  • 1842 : 203 inhabitants. Beginning of work of the headlight of the Bicquette Island;
  • 1843 : Erection of the first cross of way;
  • 1851 : The population reaches 1.391 inhabitants;
  • 1854 : Abolition of the Mode seigneurial;
  • 1871 : 3000 inhabitants;
  • 1882 : Construction of the first quay;
  • 1890, August 18th. Set fire to first church;
  • 1899 : Telco of the Mongrel obtains the permission of the municipal council for the installation of the infrastructures necessary to the phone service;
  • 1925, February 28th. Earthquake;
  • 1925, August 16th. Blessing of the 2nd cross of the Mount-St-Louis;
  • 1928 : Part of the inhabitants of the village of the Biro require the formation of the Mount-St-Louis Village;
  • 1930 : The quay of the village burns;
  • 1940 : A station with fire and a tower of drying of 30 feet are built.
  • 1942 : The first municipal dump is inaugurated;
  • 1963 : Blessing of the College Mount-St-Louis;
  • 1972 : Fusion of the two municipalities (Mount-St-Louis and Bic).

Legends

  • the origin of the name “Biro” comes from a made typographical error after Samuel de Champlain had baptized the culminating point of the area the Pic Champlain. The error, one suspects it, comes owing to the fact that one read “Biro” and not “Peak”.

  • “At the time of creation, God, having made the mountains, charged an angel with going to distribute them on all the surface of the ground. Arrived at the Biro, term of its voyage, its coat weighed still heavily. The angel then did what we would have done ourselves in similar circumstance: it turned its coat and shook vigorously it; this is why, one says, there are so many mountains to the Biro”. 1
