Origins
One of the oldest versions of this tale is undoubtedly that of
Apulée,
Amour and Psyché (extracted the
Âne of Gold ), which dates from In
1550, Francesco Straparola gave a version of it which it had drawn from
folklore
Italy N and which it published in its
facetious Nuits (
the King Porc , second night, 1st tale).
It appeared for the first time in France under the feather of Gabrielle-Suzanne of Villeneuve, in 1740, but did not know truly the celebrity when it was shortened and begun again by Jeanne Marie Leprince de Beaumont in its Magasin of the children in 1758. It is on this version that are based the majority of the later adaptations.
