The Beatles is a British group of music originating in Liverpool. Composed of John Lennon, Paul McCartney, George Harrison and Ringo Starr, it remains, in spite of the separation of its members in 1970, one of the most popular rock groups in the world. In twelve years of existence, and only seven years of career discographic, Beatles made appear twelve albums, of 1963 with 1970, and composed more 200 songs, that is to say on average an album every nine months, particularly remarkable productivity during the time 1963-1966, where, between the ceaseless rounds and the participation in two feature-length films, they published seven albums, thirteen individual and twelve “maxis”.

The songs of Beatles marked the Années 1960 and the following generations and their melodies were adapted to many musical genres, in particular Jazz or the traditional (symphonic) and Baroque. Beatles remain the artists having sold the greatest number of discs with the world. “Placed at the prow” of the evolution of the youth and the popular culture of the years 1960, their style, their clothing, their speeches, their planetary popularity, their consciences social and political growing with the wire of time, extended the influence of Beatles well beyond the music, until the social and cultural revolutions of their time.

John Lennon summarized the beginnings of the group as follows:

He was once three named little boys John, George and Paul, of their Christian name. They decided to be put together because they were kind to be put together. When they were together, they wondered for what to make, after all. Then it suddenly pushed guitars to them and they formed noise. In the beginning, that did not interest anybody.

“Fifth Beatle”

A title of “fifth Beatle” was allotted to one moment or another with:

  • Stuart Sutcliffe, for its role at the beginnings of the group, in particular with Hamburg;

  • Brian Epstein, discoverer, then To manage of Beatles;

For its active contribution with the music of Beatles, of which he was the producer of the beginning at the end of their career discographic (including for the album Let it Be which “was then overproduced” by Phil Spector), arranger and frequently additional musician, it is with George Martin that must return this title symbolic system.

History of the group

1957-1962: beginnings

Nothing really touched me until the day when I heard Elvis. If there had not been Elvis, there would not have been Beatles.

John Lennon is a teenager of Liverpool raised by his aunt “Mimi” - Mary Elizabeth of his true name. His/her father, Alfred “Freddie” Lennon, a sailor, quickly forsook his mother, Julia Stanley, and his child whom it did not have the means of only keeping near it. Hamburg

Five days before leaving for Germany, on August 17th, 1960) and in Hamburg in 1961 decides to remain when his/her comrades regain England.

Intuition of George Martin

Finally, only George Martin, then producer at Parlophone, a division of EMI, is interested. The profitable sessions of Sgt Pepper' S begin with the recordings from the titles Penny Lane - from Paul McCartney - and Strawberry Fields Forever - of John Lennon - where each one milked of nostalgia of its childhood with Liverpool. Beatles learn its death with the return from a first meeting with the Maharishi Mahesh Yogi - a guru to which George Harrison had stuck - to Bangor, with the Wales, where each one was seen delivering a Mantra. 1969 - 1970: end

The project “ Get Back ”

In January 1969, Beatles are found around a new project initiated by Paul McCartney: to film and record repetitions to lead to a live service in '' '', to return at the origins and to banish any addition in studio. Beatles are folded back then on their own studio to the 3, Saville Row where the seat of their company Apple is located, associate Billy Preston with the keyboard on the initiative of George Harrison, and end up giving their ultimate public service on the roof of their building, on January 30th, 1969, which is stopped at the end of 42 minutes by the police force following complaints due to din. This month of January 1969 leaves the film Let It Be , chronicle of the dissolution of a group. One sees there in particular George Harrison challenging Paul McCartney: “OK, good, I of insane. Once sessions of disc Abbey Road completed, and whereas individual As Together / Something will occupy the head of the hit-parades everywhere - while the 33 turns will remain 17 Nº1 weeks in England starting from the October 4th), John Lennon announces in other Beatles that it definitively leaves the group at a meeting at the end of September 1969. Northern Songs was indeed held to 51%, that is to say the majority of the shares, by Brian Epstein through its company NEMS. Its family, once this last missing, will decide to sell with the empire ATV, in 1969, without Beatles being able nothing to make in 1985.

The very last session of recording of Beatles (without Lennon) takes place on January 3rd, 1970 with the title of George Harrison I Undermines Me leaves in November 2006. Musical influences

The principal musical influence of Beatles at their beginnings seems to be Elvis Presley. Other artists of Rock'n'roll “roll, in particular Buddy Holly, Chuck Berry, Eddie Cochran then the British first rockers, in particular Cliff Richard and the Shadows, also marked the initial group. To also note the production of a Cartoon film, Yellow Submarine , where six their songs (including four news) appear in 1968. Actors make the voices but the four Beatles appear in a short sequence of fence of film.

The Beatles was also the title of a cartoon diffused the United States with utilizing the four Beatles in their preceding look, i.e. without moustache nor glasses. The voices of the characters in common did not have anything any more with those of Beatles, their accent of Liverpool having been regarded as not easily comprehensible by the American public.

Records

During a long career discographic of only seven years, Beatles one determined a great number of world records of which the majority remain to be improved. Here a nonexhaustive list of these records.

  • greater number of discs sold estimated by EMI to more than one billion, all supports confused throughout the world;
  • greater number of certified albums “platinum” (more than one million sold copies) for an artist or a musical group (thirteen, only for the the United States);
  • greater number of certified albums “diamond” (more than 10 million sold copies). They are six: Sgt. Pepper' S Lonely Hearts Club Band , the White Album , Abbey Road , The Beatles 1962-1966 , The Beatles 1967-1970 , and One ;
  • greater number of classified albums N°1 for a musical group (19 in the USA, 15 with the the United Kingdom);
  • greater number of past weeks in the first place of the sales (174 in the United Kingdom, 132 in the United States);
  • greater success during the first week of sale for an double album, with 855.473 past copies of the disc Anthology 1 in the United States between the 21 and on November 28th, 1995;
  • faster CD sale of all times with One , 13 million copies bought in four weeks, 2000.

Individual

  • Beatles obtained more N°1 in the world than any other musical group (in particular 23 in Australia, 23 with the Netherlands, 22 with the Canada, 21 in Norway, 18 in Sweden etc…). They would have in fact which been able to take down some even more if their clean individual had not entered in “internal” competition. For example, the 45 turns Penny Lane/Strawberry Fields Forever was published as “a double face has” what involved a counting of sales and diffusion separated instead of being collective;
  • In the English and American “charts”, John Lennon and Paul McCartney is the authors more “crowned” of the history, with 32 N°1 in the United States for McCartney and 26 for Lennon (of which 23 were written together); 29 for Lennon and 28 for McCartney in the United Kingdom (including 25 in collaboration);
  • During the week of April 4th, 1964, the songs of Beatles were in the first five places of the classification of the Billboard in the United States. The songs were in the order Can' T Buy Coils Me , Twist and Shout , She Loves You , I Want to Hold Your Hand , and Please Please Me . The following week, April 11th, 1964, 14 songs of Beatles appeared in the Billboard Hot 100 . Before them, Elvis Presley had placed 9 titles in this classification, in December 1956;
  • They hold another record in this “Billboard Hot 100”: the fact of having placed three titles one behind the other in the first place: in 1964, Can' T Buy Coils Me détrôna She Loves You , which had supplanted I Want to Hold Your Hand ;
  • the fastest sale of individual of all times is also to put at their credit: 250.000 copies of I want to Hold Your Hand sold in three days in the United States, a million in two weeks, 10.000 specimens run out per hour lasting the first 20 during the days, in the only town of New York;
  • Yesterday is the most taken again song history of music industry. The Livre Guinness of the records counts more than 3.000 versions recorded. It is also the most diffused song international history of the radio;
  • In “précommandes”, the record is of 2,1 million for Can' T Buy Coils Me (940 225 sold copies the day out);
  • Five individual of Beatles appears in Signal 100 of the best sales of all times in the United Kingdom. No other group appears there more than twice.

Services

While occurring in Shea Stadium of New York on August 15th, 1965, Beatles established new world records of assistance (approximately 56.000 spectators) and of profitability. It was the first time in the history of the popular music which a group or an artist occurred in a stage. It were also the first musical group to play Budokan of Tokyo, exclusively reserved up to now for the Martial arts, for five performances in three days at the end of June 1966, attracting more than 10.000 spectators each time.

They also established the record of audience on television (except sporting retransmissions) with more than 70 million televiewers attending their service in the ED Sullivan Show on CBS on February 9th, 1964
