The Assumption

the Assumption is a Canadian city of the province of Quebec localized in regional Municipalité of county of the Assumption. It is named in the honor of the Assomption of Marie. Located in edge of the River the Assumption, this city is the 48e city in importance in Quebec according to its population.

The city is twinned at the French city of Pons.

Geographical location

It is located at the North-East of Montreal, on banks of the Rivière the Assumption. The central part of the city is on a Presqu'île traced by the Méandre S of the river. The city is crossed by the Autoroute 40 and the roads 341, 343 and 344.

History

The city, called the “Bearing” at the 17th century, accommodates its first clearers in 1717, encouraged by the lords of the place: ecclesiastics of the seminar of Saint-Sulpice of Montreal. It is in 1724 that Pierre Lesueur, first priest, founds the parish of Saint-Pierre-of-Bearing which will become later the Assumption.

The foundation of the College of the Assumption (1832), that of the convent of the Congregation of Notre-Dame (1845), and the establishment of a court of justice and a registry office (1842) contribute to the rise of the Assumption to the 19e century.

Today, the Assumption is mainly a dormitory town surrounded by arable lands (tobacco, small fruits and Milk industry).

Administration

In 1992, the administrative fusion of the two municipalities ( city and parish) is confirmed. In the year 2000, the Parish of Saint-Gerard-Majella is amalgamated with the Assumption. The Assumption finds, with its 100 square kilometers, the same territory as at the time of colonization.
