The the Alps of the South are an not-administrative geographical area of the the French Alps located mainly in the area Provence-Alp-Coast of Azure, the remainder being in the area the Rhone-Alps.
Geography
Situation
The watershed separating the Alps from North and the South follows the southern limit of the Vercors, passes by the Col of Cross-High the, follows the southern peaks of the Dévoluy, passes by the Col Bayard, follows the southern peaks of the Écrins and passes by the Col of Lautaret.This limit corresponds to the division of water between the catchment Area of the Isere and that of the Durance. It includes/understands by order of number of French department:

- the the Alpes-Maritimes (06),
- the part of the Drome located at the south of Vercors (26)
- the Vaucluse (84)
Population
The Alps of the South underwent an important depopulation during the 20th century. The valleys are relatively narrow (Queyras, Ubaye, Vallée of the Verdon) and the great agglomerations are very few (Gap, Sisteron, Briançon, Worthy-the-Baths).
Climate
The Alps of the South undergo a mountain Climat with Mediterranean tendency . The Isotherme zero degree average in winter is located between: 1200 and: 1500 meters of altitude.
Activities
The Alps of the South, because of snowing up more difficult than in the Alps of North, have turned for several decades to the Country holidays, but try to maintain some Winter sports resorts.
