The Alps cottiennes
The the Alps cottiennes indicate at the same time a subset of the the Alps ( Alpi Cozie ) and old a Roman Province ( the Alps Cottiæ ). To note that the French translation does not make it possible to make the distinction between the two, but one finds sometimes the label of origin Cozie to indicate the solid mass.
Nevertheless, both refer to an geographical area with horse between two countries: the France (Savoy, Hautes-Alpes, Alp-of-High-Provence) and the Italy (Piedmont).
Geography
Situation
The Alps cottiennes lie between the frontier collars of the Mount-Cenis and of Larche and are located between the the grées Alps at north and the the maritime Alps (Massif of Will silver plate) at the south. They are drained mainly by the Dora Riparia, the Po, the Stura di Demonte, the Ubaye, the Durance and the Arc.They are formed by the solid masses of the Mount-Cenis, of the Cerces, the Queyras and the Ubaye/Orrenaye.
Consequently, name the Alps cottiennes generally exclusively indicates the northern part of the solid mass Italian side of the border.

History
The Alps Cottiennes are an old Roman province imperial, created by Auguste on the territory of the Segusini. This province had as a capital Segusio (Suse) and included the area ranging between the Mount-Cenis and the Viso Mount. Cottius Marcus Julius, the king celto - Ligure local, combined Rome, had opened to the Romans the road valley of Suse. In thanks of its favorable attitude, it was named prefect by Auguste and continued to reign in its capital. It dedicated to Suse in 8 av. J.C a Triumphal arch in Auguste. This Arc of Auguste is an invaluable historical testimony because it indicates the name of the 14 tribes which composed the kingdom of Cottius. It gave its name to the province, which one named before the Alps Julix.
Starting from 64 it is controlled by a Procurateur or a Préfet resulting from the equestrian Ordre. The number of governors, Procurateur S, known is very weak: only six. This procuratèle gave right level of wages centenary (100 000 Sesterce S per annum). Only one momentary exception is known: that of C. Iulius Pacatianus which was ducénaire in its government. These 200.000 sesterces of émoluement corresponded to a specific spot: to keep the collars of the Alps at the time of the fight between Severe Septime against Clodius Albinus to prevent this last from passing to Italy. This position of trust could not be granted to somebody who would not have been a close relation of the emperor.
In 297, this province disappears partly with the profit from the the Alpes-Maritimes.
