The Allman Brothers Band
The Allman Brothers Band is an American rock group originating in Macon (Georgia). The acquired group an enormous popularity in the years 1970. Just like the group Lynyrd Skynyrd, they contributed to popularize the melodies and sonorities suitable for the rock'n'roll Southerner (southern rock'n'roll).
History
Beginnings
The group is formed for the first time at Jacksonville (Florida) on March 26th, 1969. It gathers six musicians then:- Duane Allman (melody guitar, slide guitar)
- Gregg Allman (song, organ)
- Dickey Betts (guitar soloist, song)
- Berry Oakley (low guitar)
- Butch Trucks (percussions)
- Jay Johanny Jaimoe Johansson (battery)
The brothers Allman, Duane and Gregg, belonged previously to a group amateur The Escorts renamed Allman Joys then finally The Hour Glass . The Hour Glass left two poor albums at Liberty Records: Hour Knell and Power off respectively Coils in 1967 and 1968. Liberty broke the contract with all the members, except likely Gregg Allman, according to Liberty, to have some commercial potential. Duane, on its side, takes part in some recordings with the studios of Muscle Shoals (Alabama) in particular on the album Ton-Ton Macoute! of Johnny Jenkins. It then starts to type ox in the surroundings of Jacksonville at the side of Dickey Betts, Butch Trucks and Berry Oakley. Duane invites Jay Johansson, a beater with which it had on the occasion to play, to join the group which starts to take form. Gregg is then with Los Angeles for Liberty Records but Duane makes it return in Jacksonville because it is in the search of a singer for his very new group.
The Allman Brothers Band occurs with many recoveries in the South before leaving its first album The Allman Brothers Band . If the critics greet this album blues-rock'n'roll, it does not find that a limited audience. The majority of the titles have a sonority blues-rock'n'roll, except notable for Dreams a piece which will constitute thereafter the base of their best pieces.
Their second album, Idlewild South (1970) produced by Tom Dowd, meets an enormous success criticizes and allows for the first time the group of good food of its music. The titles Revival and Midnight Rider illustrates the tendency of the group to carry out shorter pieces, closer to the radio operator format. The same year, Duane Allman records to it from now on traditional Layla and Other Assorted Love Songs with the group Derek and the Dominos of Eric Clapton.
In 1971, the group carries out its first album live, At Fillmore East recorded March 12th and 13rd in the temple of the rock'n'roll of then: the Fillmore East. The album meets an enormous success and is regarded today as one of the best performances live of all times. It contains this single mixture of Blues, Rock and modal Jazz which becomes the musical identity of the group.
The Allman Brothers accepted the honor to be the last group to be occurred on the scene of Fillmore before its closing in June. The ultimate spectacle that they delivered became legendary, in particular because the group played all during the night literally. In 2005, Gregg Allman told how the musicians had lost any notion of time, not realizing that it was the paddle that with the opening of the doors of Fillmore.
Tragedy and triumph
Duane Allman dies shortly after that At Fillmore East is certified disc of gold, victim of an motorbike accident on October 29th, 1971 with Macon (Georgia). The loss of their leader was very hard to box for the group, but it quickly decided to continue. The album is spread gradually on the waves, certain stations diffusing even pieces of 13 or 23 minutes, however the majority of the listeners are unaware of the death of the leader of the group.Dickey Betts replaces Duane with the guitar to complete the last album in which it took part: Eat has Peach .
The group plays some concerts with five, then decides to enlist Chuck Leavell, a pianist, in order to add a new soloist without replacing Duane directly. It is this new line-up which occurs on ABC in the emission In Concert .
A little later on November 11th, 1972, Berry Oakley dies in its turn in an motorbike accident, with only three blocks of houses of the place where Duane was killed.
Oakley is replaced by Lamar Williams at the end of 1972, just in time to complete the album Brothers and Sisters (1973). The album marks a change of course towards the country music. Separation with Tom Dowd, and influences it growing of Dickey Betts within the group are the leading causes. Brothers and Sisters comprises the two more famous titles of the group Ramblin' Man and Jessica ; the first is classified n°2 in Billboard, when the second becomes an entirely instrumental tube. The album is accessible and likes, the group is with the apogee of its popularity.
At that time, The Allman Brothers Band is one of the gravitational groups on scene. Their most famous concert will undoubtedly remain that which they give to Summer Jam in Watkins Glen on June 28th, 1973. They divide there the scene with the Grateful Dead and The Band in front of nearly 600.000 people. In their wake, many rock groups originating in the South make their appearance on the front of the scene like The Marshall Tucker Band or Lynyrd Skynyrd .
Another great moment of the career of the group takes place at the time of the Réveillon of New Year's Eve 1973. The producer Bill Graham organizes a radio coverage in their concert in Cow Palace of San Francisco through all the country.
Disorders and dissolution
Conflicts of personalities start to tear the group, while Gregg Allman and Dickey Betts launch out in parallel solos projects. Allman marries Cher, they are left quickly then are reconciled for finally separating, the whole abundantly covered by the tabloid press. The use of drug within the group does not facilitate the situation. From a strictly musical point of view, Betts and Leavell leave in opposite directions that Allman after a fashion tries to reconcile. This tension fades on the album Win, Lose gold Draw (1975) to which certain members take part only by far even at all. The group explodes in 1976, after the arrest of Gregg Allman for possession of narcotics and especially after this one agrees to testify against a friend and employee to the group. Leavell, Johansson and Williams form a new group Sea Level, while Betts is devoted to its career solo. All the four publicly swear more not to want to work with Allman.Capricorn Records will leave an double album containing the new recordings live Wipe the Windows, Check the Oil, Dollar Gas in 1976. The album will be sold well without being a business success.
The group is reformed in 1978 and records Enlightened Rogues (1979). Novel members make their appearance: DaN Toller (guitar) and David Rook Goldflies. They replace Leavell and Williams which prefer to concentrate on Sea Level. The album will have only one minor success, the popularity of the group is blown and of the financial troubles threaten Capricorn Records which goes bankrupt in 1979. PolyGram repurchases the catalog and The Allman Brothers Band signs at Arista Records. The group will still leave some albums, all descended by criticism and returns Johansson. The group separates again in 1982.
Resurrection
The group is reformed in 1989. They make the round of the estival festivals in the United States and regain little by little their lost popularity. Warren Haynes (guitar, song), Johnny Neel (keyboard and harmonica) and Allen Woody (low guitar) join the group. Again, Leavell and Williams do not take part in the project: the first share in round with the Rolling Stones, as for Williams it is embanked by a cancer in 1983. The group signs at Epic Records and leaves in the tread Seven Turns (1990) which attracts itself very good criticisms. Neel leaves the group which connects a series of albums received well by criticisms but whose sales will remain modest. The albums Shades off Two Worlds (1991) and Where It All Begins (1994) receive the assistance of a new percussionnist Marc Quinones. Haynes and Woody create a parallel project Gov' T Mule in 1994. In 1995, the group is allowed with the prestigious Rock-and-roll Hall off Famed and in 1996 decreed the Grammy Award of the best instrumental performance rock'n'roll for their title Jessica is seen. When Haynes and Woody decide to be devoted full-time to Gov' T Mule they are replaced respectively by Jack Pearson and Oteil Burbridge. Derek Trucks replaces Pearson in 1999, it is not other than the nephew of Butch Trucks, member original of the group. In 2000, the group refuses that Dickey Betts unites with the estival round for personal reasons and professional. It was thus replaced by Jimmy Herring. Betts brings a lawsuit with the three other members and estival separation turns to the final rupture. The group leaves all the same new CD live Peakin' At the Beacon recorded in Beacon Theater New York. The same year, the former bass player Allen Woody is found died on August 26th.
One asked Warren Haynes to join the group and after a passage successful in Beacon, it decides to carry out face at the same time Allman Brothers and Gov' T Mule. The album Hittin' the Note , produced by Haynes, leaves in 2003 and conquers at the same time critical and public, just like the DVD Live At the Beacon Theater (2003). CD live One Way Out (2004) fence sessions in Beacon.
The Allman Brothers Band obtains two nominations in Grammy Award of the best instrumental performance in 2003 and 2004 for the same title Instrumental Illness resulting from the albums Hittin' the Note and One Way Out . In 2003, the magazine Rolling Stone selects Duane Allman, Warren Haynes, Dickey Betts and Derek Truks for their classification of the 100 best guitarists of all times. Allman is classified there in the second place, while Truks is the youngest classified guitarist.
The group in its new composition knew to renew its public by dividing the scene with younger groups, whose scenic services make the good share with the improvisation such as Moe or String Cheese Incident. The Allman Brothers Band constituted one of major attractions of the festival of Bonnaroo in 2003 and 2005. In 2005 and 2006 they occupied during two days the scene of the festival of Wanee with Live Oak (Florida) at the sides of their own derived groups Gov' T Mule and Derek Trucks Band, like with the new generation of the rock'n'roll Southerner like Nothern the Mississippi Allstars, Robert Randolph and the Family Band, Medeski, Martin and Wood, etc
