The Adventure of star of the West
the Adventure of star of the West (original title in English: The Adventure off the Western Star ) is a police news of Agatha Christie, initially published, in 1924, in the collection the Investigations of Hercule Poirot .
The intrigue
Note: the summary below is that of the televised adaptation of the news, and differs appreciably from the real intrigue of this one.Poirot, is excited with the idea of the arrival in London of Marie Marvelle, the “ larger star of the cinema belge ”. While waiting the garden of Hatton, the inspector as a Japp chief supervises Hoffberg. After the arrest of the robber of jewels Henrik Van Braks, its superiors say to Japp to release it (Van Braks is also an influential manufacturer of armaments).
During this time, Poirot meets Marie Marvelle, who says to him that it received three letters requiring to restore her diamond, the Star of the West, so that he finds his place on the statue of a Chinese god… Gregorie, the husband of Marie had bought it in rather mysterious circumstances. Poirot suggests that it preserves the gem, but Marie insists to keep it in her possession. She wants to show diamond with Lord and Lady Yardly who have Star of the East, the twin jewel of her own diamond. She and Gregorie also want that the property of Yardly is employed in their next film.
By accompanying Poirot in the hairdresser, Japp speaks to him about Van Braks and the visit that Lady Yardly returned in Hoffberg. At the same time, Lady Yardly tries to expose her problem to Hastings which mistakes and thinks that it as received threatening letters - a false assumption as it does not correct.
Later, Poirot and Hastings go to Yardly and learn from the mouth of Lord Yardly that it heard the existence of a twin jewel forever, and that his finances not going very well, it projects to sell his gem.
Poirot persuades Lady Yardly to carry her diamond to the dinner. Before the dinner is not been useful, the lights die out and in confusion, the diamond of Yardly lady is stolen. Hastings continues the robber and recovers the collar. But the central gem misses.
While going back to London, Poirot is informed by Marie Marvelle that its gem was also stolen.
