Summary
The history is mainly at the time of Marie Stuart, queen of Scotland, and its imprisonment with Loch Leven, then its escape and its defeat.Simultaneously with these historical events, the book tells the history of Roland Graeme, an idiotic but impetuous young man, who, after having been high with the castle of Avenel, is sent by the Murray regent to be used as page in Marie Stuart, with for mission of keeping it. It falls in love with Catherine Seyton, who is one of the ladies which accompany the queen. During the history, it appears that he is the heir to Avenel.
