TheRusset-red one

Cross-Russet-red the is a hill of the town of Lyon. It is as the name of the district located on this same hill, as one distinguishes in 2 elements: slopes, and the plateau.

The name of theRusset-red one comes to him from a cross set up in XVIe century, on the plate and carried out in stone of Couzon , of ocher color.

TheRusset-red one was called the hill which works in opposition to the hill which requests (hill of Fourvière) at the XIXe century. It indeed was a high place of the industrial weaving of the Soie whereas Fourvière gathered a great number of Couvent S and Église S.

The old Cook-the-Cross-Russet-red commune of , located on the plate, belonged to the province of Franc-Lyonese.
It was attached to Lyon in 1852, the district To cook being attached to the commune of Caluire-and-Cook.

Today still, theRusset-red one is a district with the singular town planning, marked at the same time by its geography (slopes), by its history (traboules, buildings designed to lodge the weaving looms) and by its very strong density of dwelling (one of highest of Europe).

Slopes of Cross-Russet-red the

The Pentes of Cross-Russet-red the (1 {{er}} district) are staged since the place of the Composts until the top of the hill. Famous the Montée Large Coast faces an important unevenness while crossing the district in a meridian axis. The Assembled Carmelite nuns, takes again the course of the way of the Rhine . This Roman Voie went from Lugdunum towards the Germanic one. At the beginning of the rise of the Carmelite nuns, the Botanical garden offers a sight on the peninsula and the hill of Fourvière. The district of the slopes is distinct by its culture Canut. He inherits a strong trade-union and associative culture resulting from textile industry. Its streets are narrow and often connected between them by Traboule S. the important density is reinforced by architecture of the buildings whose apartments are very high under ceiling. This criterion height was dictated by the size of bistanclaques (Jacquard looms) used by the silk workers, workmen of the Lyons Soierie S (the name of Bistanclaque comes from the noise made by the weaving looms). The activity of the textile was very strongly marked by a crisis in the years 1980. Today the rare survivors succeeded while reconverting themselves into “technical” textiles or very high-end. Nowadays, the slopes are a place marked by its abstract and associative culture which makes them gravitational, in particular near the students and artists. It is a village filled with an alternative culture. The land one was revalorized considerably since an important restoration and urban rehabilitation were initiated in the years 1990 and the district loses little by little its popular character becoming a center of attraction for the Middle-class man-Bohemian (sores)

The plate of theRusset-red one

The plate (4 {{E}} district), as its name indicates it, is a plate between the Rhone and the Saone, roughly speaking from the boulevard of Cross-Russet-red to the borders with Caluire-and-Cooking. The plate is more residential, but the inhabitants cultivate there a certain insularity with respect to the remainder of the city. The impression of village is reinforced at the time of the vogue S. theRusset-red one is distinguished from the remainder from the city by a particular environment near to a “village”. It is a little a city in the ville.
One of the symbols of this district is the Gros stone , large rock whose mineralogical composition leaves think that it was transported since the the Alps by the Glacier S (see also erratic Bloc). TheRusset-red one was connected to the center of Lyon, street Terme, by the first Funiculaire of the world, in 1860.

A social laboratory?

TheRusset-red one enjoys a particular reputation: working district at the XIXe century, it that with is taken here form the first characterized social insurrection of the industrial era (cf the detailed article the Révolte of the Silk workers). Later, it is also here that will be born the first French co-operative from consumption.

At the XXe century, the district (in particular slopes) will become true a " laboratory social" : Squatts, restaurants self-managed, parental cribs, parallel printing works, collective militants, associations in all kinds…

At the beginning of XXIe century, even if the population does change under the effect of the rise of the rents (arrived of the Middle-class man-Bohemian?), the district remains places particularly alive, still giving rise to interesting initiatives (ex: Equitable trade on the slopes, Town crier on the plate, etc).
