Thanatopractor

The thanatopractor is the expert of the care taken to deaths.

Etymology

The word comes from the Greek “Thanatos” divinity of death, and “Praktikos” to carry out a manual operation within the meaning of operating. It is thus about a Chirurgie (in the etymological sense of the term) post-mortem.

Procedure

The care of thanatopraxie taken to late consists primarily in the injection of a product Antiseptique in the cardiovascular Système, intended on the one hand to stop the bacterial evolution invading and on the other hand, to slow down the cellular destruction, leading to the thanatomorphose (Décomposition). Moreover, the injection is associated with an evacuation of the physiological liquid highly bacterial (which will be thereafter obligatorily incinerated with proof of Traçabilité).

This regulated operation, is carried out exclusively by a titular thanatopractor of a national Diplôme, in theory under the monitoring of a police officer (but seldom true in reality).

Medical and social objectives

The thanatopraxie thus makes it possible the family to re-examine last once the late one under good conditions of presentation and in all serenity without running a bacteriological risk.

The goal of the thanatopraxie has, in addition, also a psychological aiming because we now know (cf work of Louis-Vincent Thomas) whom it is necessary to collect last once and to honor the skin with the person loved in order to surround itself by a minimum of chance to live a mourning less devastator.

The care of thanatopraxie, in France, is often advised. Sometimes they are legally obligatory (between the 24th hour and the 48ème hour of the deaths if one must move the body of late) or on the contrary legally prohibited according to the causes of the death. Certain religions (mulsumane and Jew in particular) oppose a religious prohibition not having the force of law in the cases aimed by the payment, for obvious reasons of public health.

Alternatives

The family can also choose a simple funerary toilet which will be carried out by a thanatopratician. Although it does not offer the guarantees of a care of conservation, it will aim nevertheless a complete aseptie body followed by a facial tegumentary restoration (binding of the jawbones), then of a preparing.

The toilet will be known as funeral when it is carried out by a hospital agent. This one consists then of only one washing of the body. A tegumentary restoration will be possible in the presence of a surgeon (case of the bodies autopsies).

Lastly, it is known as nun when it is carried out by a monk of the Muslim community or Jew.

Let us note that the funeral and religious toilets not being acts of thanatopraxie, they do not join together the minimal medical guarantees necessary for the endeuillés present ones around late.
