Théopompe

Théopompe (in Greek old Θεόπομπος/ Theópompos ), born with Tap-holes v. 378, is a Greek historian.

Biography

He was the pupil of Isocrate. Its family was forced to leave the city because of the posted preference of her father for Sparte. It was made speaker and gained many successes. In particular, it gained the first price of the contest organized by Artémise II, queen of Carie, in the honor of fire Mausole her husband. Works

it was of its time very appreciated for its qualities of speaker. It wrote many speeches, primarily Panégyrique S. Its work essential, nevertheless, is historical. Its Hellenic (Ἑλληνικαὶ Ἱστορίαι/ Hellênikaì Historíai ), in twelve volumes, continues the work of Thucydide. They cover the period going of 411 with 394. Its Philippiques (Φιλιππικά/ Philippiká ) in 58 volumes describes the life and the reign of Philippe II of Macedonia. Its historical works were very influenced by the technique rhetoric which overloaded the course of the account, in particular by the use of many digressions morals and geographical, and the use of many reconstituted speeches.

Théompompe is the first Greek author to mention the Étrusques explicitly. Rome: he reports his catch by the Gaulois. He is famous for his love of the digressions and Denys d' Halicarnasse reports that it was considered malicious, because he liked to depict lownesses and the mediocrity of the political matters.

Recently the discovery of two fragments of papyrus (PAP Mich. inv 5982) could be vestiges of its Hellenic stories. They recall the diplomatic efforts of Théramène of Athens in 405-404 av. J. - C. to negotiate an agreement with Sparte, as well as the deployment of troops lacédémoniennes.
