Théophylacte Ier de Tusculum

Théophylacte Ier de Tusculum (born before 864; died into 924/925) was senator and consul of Rome.

History

Mentioned for the first time in a document into 901, like considers palatine of the emperor Louis III, it appears with the return of the pope Serge III - probably one of his/her cousins - during years 903/904. Like vestararius (Minister for Finance) of the pope and magister militum (commander-in-chief of the armies), it is since then the chief of the urban nobility of Rome with a great influence on the policy of the pope, above all thanks to his wife Théodora Ière de Tusculum and of its Marozia daughter, to whom it testimony (embarrassed well) of Liutprand de Crémone allots with the pope Serge III a relation from where Jean XI would have been born the future pope. Since 905 Théophylacte carries also the titles of duke and senator of the Romans.

Its work

After the death of the pope Serge III, it pushes the pope Jean X to be combined with its neighbors of the South against the Arabs who threaten the Italian coast unceasingly. In August 915, army ordered by him and its son-in-law Albéric Ier de Spolète beats the Arabs with Garigliano. The merit of Théophylacte is to have stabilized the relations in central Italy and also, as underline it other testimonys its efforts and those of its family for a religious revival. Tusculani draw their origin from Théophylacte.
