Théodule Tellier

Théodule Tellier (born about 1856 - died in the night from March 3rd to 4th 1922) was a printer French living with Amiens. He was the printer chief of the Maison Yvert and the associate of Louis Yvert in the realization of the Catalog of stamps Yvert and Tellier of 1895 to 1913.

Biography

In 1879, Tellier is engaged in the printing works of Henry Yvert, editor association of the newspaper legitimist the Echo of the Sum and owner of a flourishing printing works in Amiens. It climbs the levels until becoming printer chief.

In 1885, with died of Henry Yvert, his widow decides to take the printer chief as associated time that his/her son Louis Yvert is ready to take the changing. Tellier directs the typographical studio, then all printing works in 1889.

Impassioned postage stamps since the discovery in years 1870 of the stamps of Alsace-Lorraine, it prints carefully the Echo of the timbrology , bulletin created by Edmond Frémy of Douai. In 1890, when sick Frémy is resigned to give up its bulletin, Tellier takes it again. However, the readers collectors claim material to help them to collect: an album to arrange all the known stamps, a catalog, a service of mail-order selling of stamps.

In 1895, Tellier makes discover philately with Louis Yvert which does not want to write any more in the Echo of the Sum because it does not share the preserving ideas of his readers. The two associated ones realize in one year a catalogs exhaustive stamps which appears in November 1896 and which is named Catalog price list of postage stamps by Yvert and Tellier . In same time, preprinted albums are also published.

The success of the catalog and the material of collection ensures the perenniality of the company Yvert and Tellier. Louis Yvert benefits from it to travel to Europe while remaining in contact with Théodule Tellier which ensures the good performance of printing works.

But, the death of its grandson undermines Tellier which decides to withdraw businesses and sells its shares to Louis Yvert on April 1st, 1913. It withdraws a time in a farm with the hamlet of Extremely-Manor, close to Amiens. Patient, it must turn over to live in the city where it dies in the night from March 3rd to 4th 1922.

By friendship and although Tellier does not have any more a legal bond with the catalog, Louis Yvert decides as of 1913 that the catalog will continue to be called Yvert and Tellier .
