Text editor

A text editor is a Logiciel intended for the creation and the edition of textual files. Each Operating system provides an editor, so much his use is current, even impossible to circumvent for certain tasks (often data-processing (administration of system and software development)).

Text editor and word processing

A text editor is distinguished from a Word processing by the fact that it is directed lines of code rather than paragraph, and than the textual files do not contain a setting forms some (color, police force, etc). The word processing has a worked out format of files, containing information of presentation, while the editor uses pure textual files.

Functionalities

The most elementary functionalities of an editor are:

Interactive or not

The text editors are divided into two categories:

  • the editors Full screen (or full-screen ),

  • editors in character mode.

An editor full screen does not interact with the central processing unit that when a key like Entrée is in a hurry or one of or (Fn) the action function keys (Side) of the terminal. The remainder of time, in fact the capacities of native insertion provided by the control unit of the terminal allow the addition, the suppression or the insertion of characters in all the lines posted on the screen.

An interactive editor has almost all the power of the computer for him only, and can thus achieve actions much more powerful. A typical example is the programming of the key words of the BASIC: Alt-P writes PRINT, Alt-F written FOR, Alt-E writes END, etc These programmings can divide by three the time of striking of a program.
