The texel is a race Ovin E originating in the Netherlands (of the island of the same name), introduced in France towards 1930.
It is a sheep of large size (the ewes weigh from 80 to 90 kg and the rams from 115 to 130 kg), excel producing of Viande and Laine. The females are prolific and good milker. The breeding is done especially in the open air, in important herds. However, its not very gregarious behavior enables him to use the pastures as well as possible, often in partnership with bovines.
Its manpower in France east of approximately 350.000 heads. This race is especially high in the North-East (in particular in the the Ardennes and the Aisne, like in the Mid-west.
